Morning Newscast on WSFL in 2009

Sun Sentinel TV critic Tom Jicha has more details on Tribune’s plans for a WSFL morning newscast.

The newscast will launch in early 2009 and run from 5am to 9am. It will be “fast-paced, personality-driven, nontraditional news and information format”.

Emphasis will be placed on local content most of provided by the Sun Sentinel with editors and reporters working at the paper possibly appearing on TV.

The newscast is still in the planning stages so not many details.
WSFL is entering a crowded market though. Nearly every station in town has a morning newscast and they are for the most part similar in content when it comes to news just wrapped up in a different package. So it will be interesting to see what’s going to be so different about WSFL’s new show.

Tribune will have to work hard to change people’s viewing habits or at least make them click the remote and check out the new product. Not to mention keep them.

Sunbeam Releases Statement Regarding GM

Official statement from Ed Ansin President of Sunbeam Television:

Randi Goldklank is an outstanding broadcast executive with a record of great success. Since 2001 she has worked for Sunbeam Television Corporation in Miami and Boston as a sales executive and as general manager of WHDH/WLVI since July 2007. The unfortunate events of last Sunday night were unanticipated and Ms. Goldklank is deeply regretful. She is currently undergoing medical treatment and is on administrative leave from the company. We wish her a speedy recovery, as do her many friends in Boston and throughout the broadcasting industry.

Mike Carson, who was the previous general manager of WHDH/WLVI, has continued to work as a consultant to the stations. Effective next week, he will temporarily resume his previous responsibilities as general manager.

Looks like she’s keeping her job while getting some much needed help.

Even more local news: WAMI Adds a 3rd Hour

Univision is adding a third hour of morning news to all its Telefutura stations and that includes WAMI-TV. Noticias 23 Al Amanecer (Univision 23 News At Sunrise) will now run from 5am to 8am.

WSVN Still Fighting Developer

Channel 7’s parent company Sunbeam Television is still fighting the developer who bought the building next to its studios and plans to build condos on its place.

According to a story in the Miami Herald today Isle of Dreams LLC will be going back before the North Bay Village Commission for a third time after a meeting on Monday when the commission held any decisions until objecting parties can present their testimony.

On April 29th residents and Sunbeam TV will have an opportunity to appear before the commission and state their objections at which time or shortly thereafter commissioners will decide if the project will get the go ahead.

North Bay Village Mayor Joseph Geller maintains that the commission is to rule only in regard to building code and master plan, the same position he held when WSVN interviewed him for their story two months ago.

Meanwhile Isle of Dreams attorney Jeffrey Bercow says Sunbeam’s claims they’ll go out of business if the condos were to be built is a “complete fabrication”.

He says the plans for the condo building provide Sunbeam with access to their property and that the builder will make available 70 parking spaces reserved exclusively for WSVN.

WHDH General Manager Arrested at Boston Airport

Randi Goldklank Vice President and General Manager of WSVN sister station in Boston WHDH was arrested Sunday night at Logan International Airport for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

The airline called police about an “unruly passenger” on an inbound flight. Troopers say when they arrived they were met by a “loud and screaming” Goldklank.

Goldklank told the Boston Herald she was inappropriately touched by a male passenger sitting next to her.

About 15 minutes into the flight, as Goldklank slept, she said the man put his hands in an “inappropriate area.”

According to Goldklank, when she felt his hand, she asked him, “What are you doing?” She said the man responded, “Doesn’t that feel good?”

Goldklank said she then yelled at the man to “please leave the seat,” and the man left.

Hey at least he didn’t jerk off on her hair. That would be something to get mad about for sure. At least for most people

How ironic though, ND has become one of those branded with the “unruly passenger” tag that we see on their station’s newscasts.

And now everyone will think she’s batshit crazy, probably on purpose just because she’s a media type, and she’ll see first hand what it feels like to be on the receiving end of the media.

At least when the TV station she runs reports similar stories of other “unruly passengers” they might do it without making them look like crazy people. Unless they’re legitimately crazy.

Granted though there are many instances reported in the media and elsewhere about trigger-happy flight attendants that are too quick to call the cops or act so condescendingly that it only makes the passenger in question act more aggressively than they otherwise would.

BostonHerald: TV news exec lands in hot water

Update 5:27pm: WHDH has placed Randi Goldklank on administrative leave

Update 8:54: Boston Globe has an article quoting her rants at the officers. She allegedly made threats that she’ll call a news crew and ruin his life.

Tribune Adding Morning News on WSFL

A recent TVWeek article about Tribune’s broadcast business gives a hint of upcoming changes on WSFL as they move to The Sun Sentinel’s offices:

In South Florida, Tribune’s CW affiliate WSFL-TV is moving into the same building as the company’s Sun-Sentinel newspaper. The plan is to leverage the news off the paper’s Web site for a morning show.

According to Mr. Michaels, it will incorporate a “very high-tech but very slick look, not all that expensive, but repurposing the very expensive newsgathering that we already do for a completely different look and feel.”

Randy Michaels is the executive VP and CEO of interactive and broadcasting for Tribune.

If WSFL were to compete directly with morning newscasts from other stations it would make them the 8th morning newscast in the market counting the newscast on WBFS 33 at 7am.

A newspaper and a TV station sharing is not unheard of. Media General’s merge of the Tampa Tribune and WFLA-TV is often hailed as a perfect example where the two media outlets share not only a newsroom but also content and reporters.

So it won’t be too radical if Tribune were to add more newscasts to WSFL to compete head-to-head with the other stations in town, it would just be new for this TV market. Whether there are enough eyeballs for everybody is another matter.

And also it remains to be seen if Tribune will continue to outsource production of the 10pm newscast to WTVJ.

Univision 23 Not in HD But With New Digs

Some of us got a little too excited with Univision’s teasers.

Yesterday they debuted a fabulous new set but sadly no high definition. Yet anyways.

They posted some nice photos from the unveil on Univision23.com

And my DVR cooperated so I was able to record the 11pm newscast and take a bunch of screenshots

and  more after the jump Continue reading ‘Univision 23 Not in HD But With New Digs’

WLTV Univision 23 in HD?

WLTV is going high def today.

One reader dropped me a message saying Univision 23 will be HD on Monday.

And a little bit later another reader said the station ran a promo that said changes were coming on Monday.

So it appears at least at this time that Miami will have its 4th station broadcasting local content in high definition.
