First NBC O&O-designed Site Launches; Not for WTVJ

The first NBC O&O site designed by NBC Local Media debuted Oct 13th.

NBCChicago.com is the first NBC O&O site to move away from InternetBroadcasting by changing not only the design but also the name and branding of the station online.

No more station/channel branding. All NBC-owned stations will be re-branded as NBCCityName both online and on air.

According to NBC’s presser the new design and re-brand is “targeting “Locals Only,” providing news, entertainment and information for the true city insider” and completely moving away from using the .com as an extension of the TV station online, something a lot of people have criticized in the past.

NBC Local Media itself is apparently trying to “transform its business and become a full-service multi-platform content provider for the local marketplace”.

Oct 16th will see LA, San Diego and San Francisco getting the new digs. Followed by Dallas, Philly and D.C. on the 20th then New York and Hartford on October 27.

WTVJ, at least according to the press release from which it is missing, is not getting neither the re-brand nor the web site redesign. There is NBCMiami.com which forwards to nbc6.net though.

Right before the Olympics NBC did the reverse and re-branded their San Francsco station’s on-air look with a new graphics package and name going from NBC11 to NBC Bay Area.

Local10.com is designed by InternetBroadcasting

Rad Berky Back on Air, Just Not in South Florida

Rad Berky left WPLG February 29. In an interview with the Miami Herald he said he’s not leaving the TV business.

Random Pixels tracked him down. Rad is now back on the air doing what he does best, reporting the more serious news in local news.

He’s now part of the WCNC team in Charlotte, North Carolina. I don’t know if he’s permanent or freelancing, but either way our loss is Charlotte’s gain.

Here’s a video
of him reporting

NBC Chucks Weather Plus

Announced today by NBC News president Steve Capus Weather Plus will be history by December 31st.

And with good reason, NBC (over?)spent $3.5 bilion on The Weather Channel in July. Then put WTVJ and WVIT in Hartford, Connecticut on the chopping block to help offset some of the cost.

Post Newsweek won the bidding war for WTVJ but in late September NBC took WVIT’s for sale sign off due to the bad economy and not getting as much as they wanted for the station.

FTC Says Yes to WPLG-WTVJ Merger

The Federal Trade Commission has given the all clear for Post Newsweek to complete the purchase of WTVJ and merge it with WPLG.

According to Broadcasting and Cable as per antitrust requirements the merger had to be submitted to the Department of Justice and FTC for review with a set waiting period. Parties in the deal can request an early termination.

Today the FTC issued an early termination notice which signals they nor DOJ will seek to block Post-Newsweek from buying WTVJ.

That leaves the FCC as the last hurdle to overcome before the merger becomes reality.

As noted by B&C, the reason DOJ and FTC chose not to not block the deal are Spanish stations.

When Spanish stations are included WTVJ ranks 6th overall allowing for the merger to be approved since they are not in the top 4 stations.

When Spanish stations are taken out, WTVJ ranks either 3rd or 4th overall which FCC rules do not permit for one owner to own and operate two stations in a market that are in the top 4.

Overall it’s what I kind of predicted. They picked the ratings that most suited them and included Spanish stations to push down WTVJ’s ranking.

Someone clue me in. If, supposedly/maybe/perhaps/indeed, in America (we are in America right?) the airwaves are public and are for serving my/our interests how exactly does a Spanish station serve those of us who don’t speak Spanish!?

Just wondering.

Unconfirmed: WTVJ’s DeMarco Morgan & Tom Llamas to WNBC

DeMarco Morgan and Tom Llamas are heading to WNBC?  Allegedly confirmed by DeMarco and Tom as well as insiders over at WNBC. They have both been interviewing up in NY and apparently, WNBC is offering them both jobs. Their positions are still unknown.  Neither Tom or DeMarco have any connections with New York. Both are outsiders, but represent the minorities that WNBC says they need right now. DeMarco is on vacation for three weeks while he goes up to New York for interviews and Tom has been there as well. There are still lots of unknowns with this all, and I’ll pass any information along as soon as i get it.
