ZoomRadar; A New Weather Map on CBS4.com

WFOR has finally added one of those cool weather maps with near real time radar info to CBS4.com

CBS4's ZoomRadar Weather Map

CBS4's ZoomRadar Weather Map

CBS4 meteorologist Jeff Berardelli who apparently has some mad coding skillz created the map himself. Named ZoomRadar the new tool uses Flash and Google maps as its base and overlays near real time radar data, with rain fall rate, and severe weather warnings.

One big plus that I see about this map would be that it feels very lightweight. When it loads it doesn’t make my Firefox browser gag which even with a 8GB quad-core pc seems to be an issue at some sites with similar maps

The only negative would be that the map is a bit too narrow. It’s OK on my laptop but on the huge LCD screen it’s a bit tiny.

All in all very good and long overdue addition to the CBS4.com weather section.

Check it out.

Digital Transition: Cable Does Not Have You Covered

You’ve probably seen the ads from Comcast about the transition to digital TV where Comcast proudly claims they’ve got you covered.

Well leave it to Comcast to pat itself on the back and wink at you. Turns out it isn’t true, at least not anymore.

In the State of Washington, Seattle area at least, Comcast is going nearly all digital in 2009. Brier Dudley from The Seattle Times blogs about the DTA boxes everyone with an analog TV will soon need there if they want to be able to watch any of the channels they pay for.

Channels 2-29 will remain analog, however any channel above 29 will be digital and encrypted. That means even if you have a TV with QAM tuner or you only subscribe to so called Expanded Basic tier, channels 29-99, you will need at least DTA converter box. This will also be happening in South Florida!

According to the article Comcast will be giving two free boxes to any customer who needs them. More than that and it will cost you $1.99 per box per month.

Another downside to the DTA box are that Windows Media Center systems do not always like it.

Also the box will only work with the remote that comes with it. No universal remotes available, at least at the moment.

In our area, at least in Broward, Comcast already simulcasts the basic tier digitally and has done it for a while. You can see the macroblocking typical for digital channels if you have a cable box or DVR.

Around January 14 2009 Oregon will be getting the swith. I think it’s safe to say that our area is not far behind and every customer here with expanded basic tier will need the DTA box.

You can check Brier Dudley’s article out for the extensive Q&A with a Comcast rep if you want to know what to expect when Comcast switches the system in our area to all digital and encrypted.

WSVN Donates $70,000 to Habitat House

Yesterday 35 employees from WSVN and Sunbeam Properties joined together to help build a house for Habitat of Humanity.

WSVN’s parent company Sunbeam Television and Sunbeam Properties donated more than $70,000 to cover the cost of the house.

Instead of sending holiday gifts to tenants and brokers Sunbeam Properties also donated the usual $10,000 they spend each year to Habitat for Humanity.

WSVN’s owners are big sponsors of Habitat for Humanity. If you’ve watched the station for any length of time no doubt you’ve seen the ads for Habitat’s thrift stores with Craig and Belkys. 7’s general manager Bob Leider is Habitat of Broward 1st Vice Chairman.

WSVN anchors, reporters and behind the scenes staff regularly volunteer on a Habitat home

WPLG Changes: New Logo; Local10.com Becomes JustNews.com

WPLG Renames site to JustNews.com

WPLG Renames site to JustNews.com

Update: the new design is now live – check it out

With the nearing merger, yet to be approved by the FCC, WPLG is making changes.

Local10.com will soon be renamed to JustNews.com
In addition to the new name, the site has a new, cleaner, look with a large video player on the front page showing the latest stories.

Weather has been placed on its own website as well. Post-Newsweek’s stations will be using a subdomain on JustWeather.com. So for WPLG the address will be Miami.JustNews.com

The latest name change for WPLG’s site is one of several. It’s already gone trough several name changes over the years. From wplg.com to click10.com then local10.com

Of notice is the missing 10 in the logo.
If you’ve watched any of the newscasts recently they took the 10 out of the top weather graphics.
The 10 has been replaced by whatever you call that multi-color circle that is at the center of the zero.

Whether the whole station will receive a name change I don’t know. WDIV in Detroit already has the new look but they’ve kept the domain name ClickOnDetroit.com

You can see WPLG’s redesigned and renamed site live at JustNews.com

CBS Prez Moonves: 10 Years Till Affiliate Model is Dead

CBS president Les Moonves told MarketWatch he thinks in 10 years the local affiliate model, or at least CBS’, will be dead and networks will beam their signal to cable and satellite directly.

Adds MarketWatch:

For now, however, the network has contracts with local stations that are binding for several years.

Seeing how they keep laying off people at WFOR, I have the feeling it could go the way of WTVJ.

Miami Herald for Sale

Nothing to do with TV but shocking none the less.

NY Times says Miami Herald has been put up for sale by McClatchy. So far no buyers

NBC6’s Jose Suarez Jumps to WSFL

Tribune’s WSFL looks determined to take on the big guys and quit being one of those stations known for 1 newscast and lots of shows we used to watch years ago. And, hopefully, stronger online presence.

Announced today, NBC6 and Telemundo 51 Digital Media Director Jose Suarez has been hired as director of local programming for the morning newscast on WSFL, which debuts next month.

Suarez who joined WTVJ in 2005 as the evening newscasts executive producer, has been head of WTVJ/WSCV’s digital department since its creation in April of 2006.

Before coming to NBC6 he was the news director at WUPW, the FOX affiliate in Toledo, OH.

Miami Doing DTV Test Too

The Miami Herald’s Glenn Garvin blogs that Miami TV stations will too run a DTV on Monday just like Palm Beach TV stations.

A 06:20am and 6:20pm stations covering Miami/Ft.Lauderdale will move their programming to the digital signal for two minutes.

“Insider” says this will be done every Monday until February 17 when analog goes off for good.
