Which Station Wins @ 11?

nielsen_logo

Apparently, the folks at WTVJ are under the impression that they’re winning in the ratings war… at least on weeknights at 11PM.  According to multiple SFLTV.com tipsters, new WTVJ news director Lane Michaelson was allegedly boasting at the fact that (thanks to the new Jay Leno Show), their ratings are now number one at 11PM on weeknights.

Others claim that supposedly WPLG dropped to second place now that Charles Perez has left South Florida, and WSVN to number three (who’s 11PM ratings were never outstanding), and WFOR to dead last. The Jay Leno show made its debut to a strong audience of 18 million but on the second and subsequent nights ratings fell to below 8 million. And last week Leno’s ratings fell further to 5.7 million viewers.

…But before you get enraged by the apparent idiocy of the South Florida TV news viewers, a former WTVJ employee claims:

Results: “Poll: Which TV station is run best?”

…The results are in, and after hundreds of votes, SFLTV.com readers think that WSVN (FOX-7) is the best run TV station in South Florida.

results

Winner: WSVN (FOX-7)

By a landslide, the winner is WSVN (FOX-7), with 51.9% of the votes . Coming in a not-so-close second, is WPLG (ABC-10), with 26.7% of the votes. WFOR (CBS-4) comes in at a rather lousy 11.5%, and from reading the comments, this is partially due to the lack of High Definition. Finally, WTVJ (NBC-6) comes in dead last (yet again) at 9.9% of the votes… and the reason for that? Well, you figure it out.

Be a Scary Weatherman This Halloween

…and you think South Florida stations are pulling horrible PR stunts. This is one of those stories to be filed under the “WTF” section. A Central Florida news station is actually asking it’s viewers to dress up like their meteorologist, Danny Treanor, this Halloween. CFNews13.com offers a download link for the mask; then encourages their views to dress in a suit and a “spiffy” tie, and send the photos into the station.

“Many News 13 viewers love meterologist Danny Treanor, but now you can be him!

Because that’s not creepy at ALL.

Check out the full sized mask, and all of it’s creepy-goodness after the jump. Hat tip to FNC for the link.

Check Out WPBF’s New Studio

wpbf.studio.tourWPBF posted a video on YouTube from their broadcast showing off their new digs.

Looking good but … think I was right when I said they’d tout the many  monitors as being high tech. I guess the average viewer is wowed by 5 monitors with “threading technology” but those out there like me who’re already “threading” at home with 2+ monitors aren’t so impressed.

Anyway, nice digs WPBF even  your main anchor spreads the cheeks from happiness (his words by the way).

Now all that’s is left is HD.

WTVJ, Other News Crews Shoved, Blocked And Assaulted

Alleged Thief Beverly Gallagher Running From Media

Alleged Thief Beverly Gallagher Running From the Media

This story is making my elbow itch! /hat tip reader who alerted me to the video links at the bottom of this post/

Yesterday 3 South Florida politicians accused of corruption were released from jail. One of them, Beverly Gallagher (the one dressed in red jacket above), a Broward County School Board member, ran from the media her son, and perhaps that’s also her daughter, got in the way to try and help mom escape to the car so she won’t have to answer questions. Like, did she really got paid $12,500 to steer school board business to a certain company? Continue reading ‘WTVJ, Other News Crews Shoved, Blocked And Assaulted’

WSVN Adds Newscasts on Weekends

7newsWSVN announced today they’re adding two thirty-minute newscasts on Saturday and Sunday.

Beginning September 26, 2009 WSVN will add a 30-minute newscast on Saturdays and Sundays at 11pm, going head to head with already established newscasts in that time slot from WFOR, WTVJ and WPLG. The station’s Sunday sports wrap up show ‘Sports Xtra’ will now start at 11:30pm.

According to Broadcasting & Cable, BIA Financial estimates WSVN was first in terms of revenue for 2008 with$89.2 million, $19.6 million ahead of Post-Newsweek owned WPLG which came in second with $69.6 million in revenue for 2008.

A reader alerted us they saw WFOR reporter Natalia Zea’s Facebook status said she’s the new weekend anchor of CBS4 News. We looked into and also checked out her Twitter account, she confirmed the news there as well.

Zea will be anchoring the Saturday and Sunday evening editions of WFOR CBS4 News.

I also noticed that Zea had sent out a tweet on September 12th saying she’ll be anchoring CBS4 News both days that weekend.

This is an interesting development to say the least. Natalia Zea replaces Gwen Belton who joined WFOR in September 2008 and has anchored the weekend newscasts since then.

We don’t really know the reason behind this switch but at least our tipster claims that Belton wants to be a reporter.

Belton came to WFOR after a 2-year stint as a reporter for CBS Newspath. Before that as most of you know she was one of the anchor/reporters at WPLG. She left WPLG in the fall of 2005 when the station opted not to renew her contract. She was joined WPLG in August 1998.

Natalia Zea joined WFOR in November 2006 from WOAI San Antonio.

WSFL Reporter Kicked While Covering Story

A WSFL video journalist was kicked in the stomach the other day while covering the Coral Gables murder!

WSFL Reporter Kicked in the Stomach

WSFL Reporter Kicked in the Stomach

Alex Zequeira was at an apartment building with other news crews talking to a man thought to be the father of the girl at the center of the Coral Gables High School murder case. In a video from the incident, the man in question can be seen leaning against a white car and presumably talking to other media crews when he suddenly turns to the WSFL’s camera and unprovoked kicks whoever held it. Immediately after that the man could be seen picking up something off the ground, it looked like a set of keys to me, and throwing them at Zequeira.

Zequira was not injured but he filed a police complaint against the man.
