WTVJ’s John Gerard Moves on to WOAI

WTVJ weekend meteorologist John Gerard is moving on and switching TV stations, but this time it’s not in South Florida. Gerard has been hired as the chief meteorologist of San Antonio NBC affiliate WOAI. He is replacing that station’s former chief meteorologist Jennifer Broome who was there for 10 years but whom the station decided not to renew.

John Gerard has been in South Florida since 1992 when he joined WPLG as their morning and noon meteorologist. In 2003 he joined WTVJ.

Gerard’s first day at WOAI is May 10th.

Former WPTV VP Honored Posthumously

Former WPTV Vice President Bill Brooks was honored posthumously by The Forum Club of the Palm Beaches with “Exemplary Elected Officials” award. The award is given to elected officials who’ve made outstanding contributions to the community.

Brooks who died in January 2010, served on the Palm Beach Town Council after retiring from WPTV. Prior to that he was WPTV’s Vice President and General Manager from 1981 until 1998.

WPTV’s Jim Sackett Stays For Another Year

WPTV’s lead man has agreed to stay another year reports Page2Live. Apparently Jim Sackett, who’s been the main co-anchor at WPTV for many years, got convinced by station management to put off retiring and put in another year at the anchor desk. Wit some caveats. The station’s management allegedly wanted him for two more years but Sackett only agreed to one with a six month part-time work schedule.

Page2 adds that that Jay Cashmere who was considered most likely to succeed Jim Sackett when he retires will not. Management put Cashmere on the anchor seat at 5 and 5:30pm but rival stations WPEC and WPBF have continued to gain on WPTV. WPEC has been closing in on WPTV and even dethroning the once always #1 Newschannel 5.

Come this May, WPTV will be losing another high-profile anchor – Chandra Bill, who is leaving the station and the  TV news business to work a Chick-fil-A franchise with her husband.

WPBF Dumps Dr. Phil For Newscast at 5

Not long ago the opposite was happening but it wasn’t that long ago either when WPBF took a page from WPLG’s book and replaced their 5pm newscast with Dr. Phil. For those of you keeping tabs, Dr. Phil at 5pm on WPBF was announced in August of 2009. To remedy the switch WPBF also introduced a newscast at 4pm.

On April 13th during a newscast WPBF announced as of April 19th, 2010 the news are back on at 5pm and Dr. Phil is getting offed. What time slot Phil is getting pushed to we don’t know yet and if we had to make a guess, the most likely reason for his offing probably has something to do with ratings.

Interestingly WPBF will continue to air their 4pm newscast which gives them two and a half hour of early evening news, half an hour less than what WSVN is currently airing on weekdays.
