Chris Gilks, an executive producer at WPLG, passed away last week after battling cancer.
Gilks produced the weekend morning newscasts for WPLG as well as many of the special features such as Dwight Lauderdale’s trip to Egypt.
Prior to WPLG Chris Gilks was the news director at WGCL, the CBS affiliate in Atlanta, GA.
WPLG aired a very nice tribute to Chris in which fellow colleagues remembered him. Even Suze Orman shared her experience of working together. You can check it out here

WPLG is giving Dwight Lauderdale a major sendoff. There was a gathering at the station with the employees then a lunch at an area restaurant
The biggest surprise though was a live call from Gloria Estefan who wished Dwight well and also sent him a very delicious looking cake. Miami-Dade mayor Carlos Alvarez also made a pre-taped appearance wishing Dwight all the best.
Laurie Jennings said there will be more surprises during his final newscast tonight at 11pm.

Dwight Lauderdale will say goodnight to South Florida viewers for the last time on Wednesday at 11pm
Barry University in Miami is honoring Dwight Lauderdale with a scholarship in his name. The Dwight Lauderdale Scholarship will be given to broadcast communications students each semester.
Ann Bishop, another famous WPLG anchor who worked by side with Dwight Lauderdale, has a scholarship in her name at Barry University as well.
