WSVN’s sibling in Boston is turning the HD switch on Moday at 4pm (or tuesday at the latest) according to Boston media blog The Scoop and btvn
They just got done re-modeling their newsplex. The video wall behind the anchors with all the little monitors was shortened a bit and in their place are several large flat screen tvs.
The 2nd floor has a projector screen like WSVN’s with blue columns on each side.
The light boxes in the middle between the floors are now all red instead of blue! And the anchor desk has received a rather nice update.
WSVN is expected to probably do similar changes to their newsplex, but unfortunately couple weeks ago I was told they’ve pushed their HD transition date from August into the fall. I don’t know what caused it or if it’s definitive delay or what, yet.
No exact date still but most likely before or after the Olympics, which begin August 8.
One of the last things delaying them is the lack of HD graphics. WSVN’s graphic department is too busy with everything else. Several creative directors leaving hasn’t helped things either
I’m told WHDH and WSVN’s graphics package will be almost identical though.
Speaking of WHDH, Boston TV blog The Scoop says WHDH will be HD by July 15th. They’re putting up a green screen behind the anchor desk after sweeps with a pre-recorded loop of the newsplex while work is being done to the studio. Mainly removing the TV wall and replacing it with a giant projection screen!
A reader says he saw Disney HD and ABC Family HD in clear QAM on Comcast. They’re showing up on 49.22 and 49.23, an analog channel frequency something a few people in other states have reported seeing.
Has anyone else with QAM tuner seen this?
Nothing official from Comcast as of yet on adding new channels however, they’re not in the guide and no messages on the DVRs.
And still no CNNHD or CNBCHD, not that they show all that much HD, but still…
Reader Wayne from Orlando was kind enough to drop me a note that WKMG in Orlando has gone HD. The station is doing something similar to NBC 6 turning on the hi-def and not saying a word about it for a while.
WKMG is owned by the same company as WPLG Local 10, Post-Newsweek.
WPLG however will not broadcast their newscasts in HD until they move to their new building in Pembroke Park this or next year. And I’m hearing that when it happens they’ll be HD in the studio and in the field i.e. photogs, copter, ENG trucks will be HD-capable
They finally mentioned their HDTV transition during the NBC 6 News at 6 a while ago. And there’s a promo for the switch, which oddly is running in 4:3 with curtains.
there is a nice behind the scenes look at WTVJ’s HDTV transition on NBC6.net including video tour of the Chopper 6, also in HD.
Not to over do it but the breaking news weather update at the moment is HD. The breaking news bump and studio shots of Paul Deanno are HD the weather graphics however are not. THe sidebars are very similar to what’s on Nightly, and much better than the regular NBC6 ones.
I’ll have screenshots soon
//update: these are from one of the news updates today: i’ll have the full HD version soon
an NBC6 insider left this comment in the previous post saying that WTVJ should be in high def March 12, that’s next Wednesday
NBC6 is going HD officially next Wednesday, March 12th. They are starting to use their APC system this Wednesday at 6pm. The APC system is rundown driven and that is the system that is run by one person, essentially hitting the space bar on a computer and one other person in the room. NBC doesn’t have to get rid of camera people since they never had any, at least not for years. All the in studio cameras are robotic. As for the APC system, they are rushing it. They have been rehearsing since November and newscasts are falling a part and it sounds and looks like crap. Some NBC exec ordered it to go online this week, so it is going online wheather it works well or not. NBC6 is about to shoot itself in the foot.
Let’s hope it is March 12th and everything goes as planned, and hopefully we won’t have to see a lot of something like this:
In time for February sweeps WTSP Channel 10 in Tampa will launch their newscast in HD. The station will debut a brand new studio and a graphics package similar to that of WUSA in D.C. and WIXA in Atlanta.
This is a friend of a friend type rumor so take it with a bag of salt! But, allegedly, the new and improved CBS Early Show which on Monday January 7th will be in HD. And also allegedly CBS4 News will use the moment to go HD as well.
The Early Show’s Wikipedia page notes that it isn’t known if high definition is in the cards.
There is (or was, I haven’t checked lately) promo that was rather cryptic if I remember correctly, insinuating that there is a new way to watch your morning news or something along those lines. Unfortunately my important my hard drive crashed so I can’t go back and replay video.
Either way the time for Miami to have HD news has long passed. We need to see those gashing wounds zoom-ins in HD! Talk about engagement and emotional connection with viewers!
Someone left a tip about this several times - I wasn’t ignoring you, just been busy - so thank you for the persistent effort
Update: just saw the promo on 4 and it said at the start of it “Begining Monday there is a smart new way to start your day in South Florida” … I doubt it’s anything to do with HD
