Comcast Raises Rates 2.5%

Comcast will be raising rates an average of 2.5% in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

South Florida Comcast Public Relations Director Spero Canton gave the South Florida Business Journal the usual templated answer on why rates are going up again this year:

…the price adjustments “reflect the increased value of our services, including recent enhancements to our video-on-demand service across South Florida.”

Adding Comcast gave away $7.6 million in 2007 locally in the form of grants and in-kind services to schools and non-profits.

At least my $160 monthly bill is good for something if it can’t help fix over-compressed HDTV and schizophrenic DVR that goes nuts without warning.

Congrats to the winners!

update 5.31.08: The Sun Sentinel has a bit more detail on the coming rate incrase.

According to them, Davie, Lauderdale Lakes and Cooper City will now pay $16.99 for limited basic, up from $14.50 a 17.1% incrase

Digital Starter package is going up from $52.95 to $54.99 a 3.8% increase

Palm Beach Co saw increase of expanded basic in January from $47.99 to $50.95 a 6.1% increase and they are not part of the latest price changes.

Coral Springs and Hallandale Beach may see limited basic price decrease from $0.04 to $0.38 cents

Comcast insists the rate incrase has to do with add more content to Video-on-demand and “improved customer service initiatives”!

DVR cost won’t go up, it would’ve been asinine if it did, considering the issues these boxes have.

Comcast Adds More HD Channels

Just saw a message on the DVR box that says Comcast added AMC HD, ABC Family HD, CNN HD, Disney HD, Science Channel HD.

Science Channel HD has been available for a while though so not sure why they’re announcing it now.

New Comcast HD Channels?

A reader says he saw Disney HD and ABC Family HD in clear QAM on Comcast. They’re showing up on 49.22 and 49.23, an analog channel frequency something a few people in other states have reported seeing.

Has anyone else with QAM tuner seen this?

Nothing official from Comcast as of yet on adding new channels however, they’re not in the guide and no messages on the DVRs.

And still no CNNHD or CNBCHD, not that they show all that much HD, but still…

Comcast wants to show you ads based on your body form

Comcast wants to put body form recognition in your cable box so it can see who’s in your living room (or bedroom) and serve you tailored ads. In the bedroom too much? More than one body there? How ’bout that PlayBoy channel special we got on now eh? newteevee /via consumerist/

Comcast South Florida upgrades

South Florida will be part of that 20% Comcast plans to upgrade with Docsis 3.0 which should give us some nice internet speeds to watch and download TV even faster. At least on paper.

No More WPLG in Boca Raton

A tipster says WPLG was removed from Comcast cable in Boca Raton. I’d say probably in all of Palm Beach County too.

WSVN was the first to be removed from all cable systems in Palm Beach County in 2005 after Comcast took over Adelphia. Back then it was speculated WFLX complained too many people watched WSVN and it took away from the station’s already low ratings even when American Idol was on.

It probably wouldn’t be a stretch to say WSVN and WPLG were favored by Boca viewers. If I remember correctly in 1999 or 2000 then Adelphia cable removed WSVN from its channel lineup but had to put them back on after so many subscribers complained.

This time though both stations are permanently off. Of course anyone with an indoor or outdoor antenna can pick up all Miami stations all the way up to Palm Beach Gardens.
