Video after the jump.

WTVJ Re-brands Newscasts; NBC [Your City]

NBC6 Logo

It appears as if WTVJ (NBC6) has done some minor re-branding in the past few weeks, in an apparent effort to make the station feel more local to the viewer. Anchors and reporters have started to refer to the station as “NBC Miami” during general newscasts, where as reporters on assignment or from a live-shots refer to the station as “NBC [City filmed/reporting in].” This results in some interesting names for the station, such as “NBC Wilton Manors,” “NBC Davie,” and “NBC Hialeah.” At this point, no logo/voice over re-branding has taken place. Alert reader “Alain/TMBtD” points out that a recent promo refers to the 11 P.M. newscast as “NBC Miami News at 11.” Perhaps this is still in it’s experimental phase.

Report: Layoffs at WTVJ Imminent

Possible Layoffs at WTVJAccording to reports on FTVLive.com, layoffs may soon be on their way to all NBC O&O’s, including WTVJ. According to sources, NBC O&O’s are being asked to pay in excess of 10 million dollars together to help cover the reported nearly $40 million dollars being given to Conan O’Brien and his staffers as a severance payment. The alleged problem is there is simply no way to raise the money without layoffs. FTVLive says that in other words, more layoffs are expected to hit the owned and operated stations.

“The only way the O&O’s will be able to raise the money will be through layoffs.” A source tells FTVLive’s Scott Jones.

So what’s next to go at WTVJ? Better yet, what exactly can go at WTVJ? The once glorious station is running a skin and bones operation as it is; already dissolving it’s weekend morning news and sports.  What more can they get rid of? What (or who) do you think is next to go?

Kevin Corke Debuts on WTVJ

Kevin Corke

The highly anticipated Kevin Corke is set to debut tonight on WTVJ. SFLTV.com told you about him last October when WTVJ announced Corke as Julia Yarbough’s replacement. Corke (pictured to the left) has anchored the news desk for NBC’s ‘Today Show’ as well as on MSNBC. According to the Sun-Sentinel, Corke will be hosting the 7 & 11 newscasts. This leaves the question as of who will host with Nespral on the 6PM show, or if she will continue to solo-host it. WTVJ is banking on Corke for ratings. Expect promos in the coming weeks about how experienced (at the national level) Corke is, and how trusted he should be. But is this enough to draw in ratings? Will Corke be enough to pull WTVJ out of dead last place? What do you think?

NBC Miami Launches New iPhone App

NBC Miami has joined the app bandwagon, and recently launched it’s iPhone Application.

The application will do what the website tries to do, and keep you both in the know, and connected to your community. The app will keep you updated with what is going on around town, local news, weather, sports, and many other things. It also has a feature allowing to also take a picture from your iPhone, post it on NBCMiami, and share it amongst other Miamians who are also using the app.

With this app, you will be able to continue using the same functions that you normally would use with other applications on the iPhone, such as: panning, zooming, and the option between landscape and portrait mode. Shaking the phone will refresh the stories, and constantly update you with new stories and images that are being posted. The app also integrates easily with your e-mail, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.

The NBCMiami app is available in the Apple App Store for free, but the iPhone/iPod 3.0 software update is required in order to be able to use this application.

First on SFLTV: WTVJ Anchor Julia Yarbough Out; Who’s In?

Update: Just after checking around, SFLTV.com (yet again) broke the story. Gotta love the newspapers and big-dog sites being beat by this lil’ ol’ blog.
Lots of big news going on while I was on my little vacation… Figures! Let’s get straight to it: Julia Yarbough will be leaving NBC6 soon! SFLTV.com’s sources have been telling us for months that her departure would be coming soon, and about seven days ago, we were notified by an anonymous tipster telling us she announced her departure. According to our sources, Yarbough will be leaving the TV news industry for good, choosing to pursue a personal fitness career. We also were informed that a number of months ago, she started a new “dating-style website.” This may not come as a surprise to some. Her website has been in development for months, as well as the fact that she’s been seeking her personal training certification. We don’t have any word on her departure date; however, we are awaiting further confirmation.

But wait… there’s more juicy information! Guess who’s been seen on set testing out for Yarbough’s position with Jackie Nespral?

…Go ahead, guess. I’m willing to bet you wont guess correctly.

WTVJ Traffic Reporter Re-Assigned?

Photo Via: NBCMiami.com

Photo Via: NBCMiami.com

In 2007, WTVJ introduced the concept of a “on-air traffic reporter” to the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale market under split approval. Since then, the more conservative (and “old fashioned”) readers here on SFLTV have been adamant about their disapproval for this rather delayed method of receiving traffic updates. I’m not quite sure whither our readers dislike Roxanne Vargas and her reporting (or lack of) experience… or dislike the idea of Roxanne Vargas. Personally, I feel as if she does a fine job and improves as time goes on… None the less, is that traffic reporter you love to hate no longer a traffic reporter?

Independent sources have been reporting to SFLTV.com that Roxanne Vargas has no longer been doing traffic updates on “Today in South Florida.” In what could be temporary, she has been reassigned to reporting more “lifestyle” reports, including a segment about the “trending topics” on Twitter. In place of Roxanne, Karen Curtis (who was the main traffic reporter during the Lonnie Quinn era) has been rotating with Metro Traffic’s Kristen Kelly in delivering the morning updates.

Attempts to reach the station and select employees for comment did not receive a response. We’ll keep you posted.

Tisha Lewis at WSFL

Well that favorite anchor who we love to hate appears back on the South Florida airwaves. Tisha Lewis, the reporter laid off from WTVJ last month, has now been spotted working at WSFL (The CW). After reciving multiple tips reguarding Tisha, we finally spotted a video with her narration. I’ll post the link as soon as I find it. Congrats, Tisha.

WTVJ’s South Florida Today Goes Pay for Play?

NBC6's South Florida Today

NBC6's South Florida Today

Will WTVJ’s 11AM talk-show transfer to a new pay for play format? According to our sources and insider reports, it very well may be. For those not familiar with what a “pay for play” format is, allow me to explain it in blunt terms. It’s a paid advertisement. A paid advertisement that could very well be interpreted as an endorsement from the friendly faces you get your morning news from. If our sources are correct, NBC6 will transfer to this new format at the end of the month. Sources tell us that the cost would be from 1500 to 5000 dollars per segment, depending on the length.

We e-mailed multiple staff members at NBC for comment, including the show’s producer Tammy Delgado. Shockingly, we received no response. However, we did receive a response from Barbara Alfonso, WTVJ’s “Manager, Programming and Community Marketing” specialist that flatly denied the allegations of the new format. Although not directly confirmed by the station, we have very credible sources that tell us differently. So why exactly do I have an issue with “Pay for Play” on NBC6? My personal opinion after the jump.

What’s next to go at NBC6?

As the layoffs at WTVJ continue, the question often asked is “what’s next to go?” The following are predictions based on alleged tips, and general knowledge. None of the following is confirmed in any way.

  • South Florida Today – This really seems like the only “dead weight” left at the station. Think about it. They need morning news. They need evening news at 6PM and 11PM. Do they need to staff a “talk show” that pulls in low ratings, and is most likely costing more that than it makes? They just diminished the non-essential weekend sports show. South Florida Today is next on the hit list.
  • AM Producer(s)/Staffing – I want to stress that this is all just non-confirmed predictions. With the 11AM show gone, why keep the producer or staff for it? It’s just a given that if a show gets canceled, so does it’s staff.
  • Dead Weight Reporters – If you don’t report every night, or have no current time when you’re needed; why keep you? Political reporters are a thing of the past. If you can’t be multi-functional and a cost saver for your station, you can say goodbye.
  • The Studio – Several people have commented saying that a move to Hialeah is possible. Telemundo owns a facility there, and that was the location T51 was planning on moving into after the sale. Why pay for two facilities in this tough time?

Note: I’m not talking about anyone in specific in the article. I’m just throwing out the most likely scenarios, and the repercussions of those scenarios. Your thoughts in the comments.
