I just saw a new promo on 7 where they invite viewers when they see news happen to take a photo with the cell phone camera and send it to news@wsvn.com. The slogan is “See it, snap it, send it to 7″ It is a sort of a citizen journalism like what we say with the BBC where people were sending photos and videos of the bombings.

This guy walked in the Miami Herald lobby pulled a gun out and shot himself in the head. He was indicted on 26 federal counts of defrauding MIami-Dade county by helping contractors win airport contracts worth $20 million. He faces between 10 and 20 years per count if convicted
Nobody at the Miami Herald was hurt, Teel’s plan was to pass a message to a columnist there and commit suicide

South Florida BizJournals reports that WSVN/WHDH owners Sunbeam Television have created a new position - VP of Creative Services. Steve Donald has been hired to oversee all cretive services at WHDH and WSVN

Eeesh …. I just loaded WPLG’s site using Internet Explorer and in addition to allt he clutter and ads has now resorted to some very annoying overlay flash ads that range from the barely there on top of the text to on-the-whole-page kind that you have to wait to load and play itself out just so you can click on anything.
They claim to be #1 based on what I don’t know, but I do know I’ll stick to using Firefox when going to that end of the web. The flash overlay ads don’t load in Firefox, yay!
I think 4 think covered the Shuttle launch themselves, or they tossed to CBS later on not sure I tuned them in for 5 seconds and saw their graphics. WTVJ used NBC and WPLG used ABC at 10:30am. 7 of course relied on themselves as usual breaking in at 10:30am as well. Which wasn’t a bad thing to do at all.
I watched MSNBC and these talking heads during the actual launch were so annoying, Brian Williams and this other guy talking over the NASA commentor and shuttle crew the whole time. I did record WSVN on the DVR expecting a more clear uninterrupted coverage and I was right.
They stopped talking about 2 minutes before the lunch and went about 12 minutes overall with no interference from anyone, just pure NASA-TV feed.
You can see the complete video of 7’s shuttle coverage here and click on Discovery: Return to Flight
I don’t think Lynn Martinez will be leaving 7. They’re running a promo for a new segment, reported by her “7s Lynn Martinez brings you a new segment…” - Parent to Parent. So me thinks she’s staying with 7 for the near future
WPLG has chosen not to renew the contract of Arleen Rodriguez and she has left the station. The rumor is that she got into a very ugly argument with Key West cops during the coverage of hurricane Dennis.
Arleen also worked at WSVN before she left and joined WPLG.

Saw this on LostRemote.
New York 1, a cable channel in NYC, have come up with a great idea. Let viewers build the rundown of a newscast. The rundown is the order in which stories appear on-air. By going to the NY1 site, viewers (and anyone else for that matter) can select the order in which they’d like to see a predetermined selection of stories appear on the air. The top 5 stories based on the average of all the results will air weekdays on “The Call” at 9pm.
You can see the rundown here and submit your own

Swoosh up to Orlando for a sec. WESH have gone from beta to a complete release of their redesigned website. And along with the new look they also released the “Breakfast blog”. A place where the morning news team blogs about stuff. Check it out
The morning news team up in Chicago’s CBS2 are blogging as well - CBS2 Morning Team blog (via LostRemote)
Any South Florida news teams blogging yet?
I played web designer last night while watching Comedy Central and this is what I came up with. I sorta like it, for now, but there’s more that needs to be added and I will do that in the very near future if the lazy bug doesn’t bite me.
A few days ago I wondered with all the major news networks redesigning their websites, what was WSVN doing? It felt to me like WSVN’s dot com was the stepchild in the Sunbeam TV group in comparison to WHDH’s web digs.
Yesterday I wandered off over to WSVN.com and found out they have begun to archive their daily newscasts as of July 18th, including Deco Drive. Then a while ago someone emailed to say 7 has also begun including video with some of their top stories and the segments aired during newscasts.
Lets hope this time around the video won’t be around for 5 days and then get taken off.
WTVG, ABC owned and operated station in Toledo, Ohio have launched their redesigned website. I guess all nets must have conspired for a synced makeover of their sites. The site is nice sorta, but the navigation and the lack of upfront exposure to local news headlines is leaving me a bit dissapointed.
WPLG is not an ABC O&O (owned and operated station) thus they will not be getting this design.
See it in action - WTVG new look
Update: fixed the link. I’ve mistakenly linked to abc13.com instead of 13abc.com. Thanks CapeFish
All this week and next week, WFOR are running a special series on meteorologist Bob Soper - Salute to Bob Soper - taking a look at his career over the years both before and after coming to South Florida.
He is officially retiring on Wednesday July 27th.
You can watch the video segments here and send him your well wishes.
Videos maybe soon
I was cleaning the server on Friday and found recordings I was going to post but never got to it so after house hunting on Saturday if I still have any juice left in me I might add some clips. There’s lots of video that I have never uploaded, I don’t think. I just wish SonyVegas wasn’t so slow rendering otherwise I’d have a lot more clips on here.
If anyone knows any good video editing software ideas let me know please. It must be able to open and read MPEG-2 video as well as DivX and XviD flavors. Any graphics/video editing gurus around here with ideas?
