Fox13 Tampa Foxified, a preview of what’s to come?

WTVT-FOX13 Tampa is owned and operated by Newscorp. They’ve just introduced an 11pm newscast called “News Edge”, a first for a FOX O&O station. The newscast is very fast paced with flashy graphics and dramatic music that closely resembles Fox News.

I think it’s a preview of what’s to come to other owned and operated station by Newscorp. Especially considering that the same people who run Fox News are in charge here as well

Even WTVT’s slogan is “The Most Powerful Station in Local News”
Florida News Center has a few screen and video caps from the broadcast.

DirecTV fined millions for calling “do not call” list

$5.36 million fine for DirecTV because they called people who had registered their phone numbers with the “Do not call” registry.
Score one for the annoyed by telemarketing bullshit.

Some site maintenance

I’ll be doing some much needed blog maintenance in the next few days. Mainly cleaning up old links and stuff that should be deleted because right now this blog is sitting at 1.3GB space which is a pain to download for backup.

Also a new disclaimer policy will be posted

If you load the site during the maintenance time and it gives you a blank white page just come back a bit later.

7-Boston names new chief met

Max from BTVN just alerted me that WSVN sister station WHDH has promoted Pete Bouchard to chief meteorologist. Bouchard, who was previously the morning meteorologist, replaces the recently departed Todd Gross.

MSNBC ads everywhere online

(via LostRemote) NYTimes reporting MSNBC have budgeted $1 million to advertise Countdown, Live & Direct and Scarborough Country on the web only. On Wednesday Slate.com, Washingtonpost.com and Newsweek.com will only serve advertising for MSNBC the whole day.

They’ll go a bit more advanced and use Google AdWords to buy keywords for “viral video” that will show up during Google searches. Although I’m not really sure people searching for “viral video” would think of MSNBC first.

FoxNews changed coverage when Saudi billionare investor calls to complain?

Saudi billionare Al-waleed bin Talal who has an “influential number” of voting shares in News Corp, the owners of Fox News, has allegedly made Fox News change their coverage the french riots.

in an interview Al-waleed said he called Fox News “as a viewer” to complain about coverage of “The Muslim riots” and convinced Fox News to change their coverage because “they were not Muslim riots but riots against poverty and indequality”.

Dubai-based newspaper Khaleej Times reported Al-waleed has said he personally called Rupert Murdoch to complain and that “”After a short while, there was a change” in Fox News’ coverage.

Accuracy in Media is now calling for a full inquiry into the report because it “underscores the danger of giving foreign interests a significant financial stake in U.S. media companies,”

Saudi Billionaire Boasts of Manipulating Fox News Coverage

Behind the scenes at WTVJ on Discovery Times right now

Right now on Discovery Times channel a documentary called “Breaking News” giving viewers a “behind the scenes look at the news department at Miami’s NBC affliate WTVJ and the reporters covering news stories”

The first part is “Breaking News: Live from Miami”, it’s followed by “Swimming to Miami” at 2pm to 3pm also behind the scenes in WTVJ and their coverage of a confrontation between the US Coast Guard and 6 cuban refugees and their alleged mistreatment

3p-4p an unnamed Denver station gets profiled

then at 5p-6p a repeat of “Live From Miami”

“Live From Miami” looks to have been filmed at the old WTVJ building.

I liked how Kelly Craig proof reads a teleprompter copy and finds errors in the script and leaves it to see if Gerry Helfman would would stumble on the air or catch the error :) . Gerry Helfman stumbled and Kelly laughed but all was good and they remained friends :)

part 2 – Swimming To Miami
-This part traces the coverage of the cubans who were trying to swim to the beach while the coast guard chased them. Two made it while people on the beach were yelling for him to run as cops were attemting to catch him before he made it to the beach.
-It is an old documentary. It’s all from the old building in Miami and Sky6 is the old chopper that crashed with the pilot and cameraman who were killed in that crash
-Ike Seamans, Andrea Brody, Ari Odzer are so far the ones featured
-Gerry Helfman anchoring the breaking news
-Very intense fast paced during breaking news :)
-Andrea Brody gets cought up in traffic on the way to the beach and by the time she arrives nobody’s there
- NBC6 news director wants to exchange video of coast guard spraying with WPLG’s video of the cubans being sprayed by water canons. WPLG declines and 6’s news director concludes Bill Pohovey is a “jerk”
- Andrea Brody’s tape gets lost and she has to talk to fill air time (a.k.a stretch). Martha Sugalsky nearby concludes at the end “that was a long ass stretch”

WSVN/WKMG sat trucks bump into each other

Anon emailer says:

WSVN&’s satellite truck crashed into the WKMG Sat truck in front of the house in Maitland, Florida where the guy killed by the Air Marhsal lived. Maitland cops had to come out to take a report. CBS-4 actually put it in the 6 and 11pm report

I have the 11pm DVRed I might post a clip later today

update: Saw it. Nothing special. Brian Andrews was reporting from Maitland and just mentioned how there were a lot of satellite trucks lining the street and two of them bumped trying to find a parking spot. WKMG’s truck was shown and some damage to the front bumpter. No mention of WSVN

CBS 4 at Your Desk, online only newscast

I dont know if this is new, but there’s a webcast anchored by Angela Rae called “CBS4 at your desk”. It doesn’t have advertising and it looks to be about 5 or so minutes long

New CBS 4 site officially live

WFOR’s new website has gone live today as of 5pm.
www.cbs4.com

Update 5:29pm: they’ve also introduced blogs. There’s a Technology Blog but oddly it’s not signed by anyone. It could be something syndicated or someone from CBS 4 blogging.

Sadly for some, Dayport streaming video is gone. At least in it’s previous form via an embedded Windows Media player. Now it’s all flash(ed). I can’t say I will miss Dayport streaming since it made me use Internet Explorer

Is it just me or is the sound on the video player a bit too compressed and telephone-like?

Update 7:10pm: Do they have a new slogan for the web site? “CBS 4 dot com where the news is always on”
