In The WPTV Director’s Chair

Great behind the scenes view of what WPTV morning news director Charlene Mayville (sp?) goes thru to prepare the weekend morning news.

When she runs the show I wonder if she directs the camera crew only or also the anchors? It looks hard and confusing having to follow all these directions while talking about what’s on the prompter

WSVN’s New Site Is Live

The new wsvn.com is officially live.

//

So I clicked around and it appears that there are a few more things to touch up here and there but overall the site has turned out very very nicely. Of course if you read this blog you already knew what it would look like :)

The new online digs were created, and will still be maintained, by the web staff at WSVN. The extra channels such as Real Estate, Autos etc are from WorldNow.

‘7News On The Net’ is the new webcast, it runs a little over 3 minutes and features the top news and weather. Surprisingly, no burning factories somewhere in Podunk, and that’s really a good thing. The webcast will be updated 7 days a week and it will be anchored by whichever anchors are on that day.

The news stories and feature segments now come with video for the most part, which plays in a pop-up window player, with much better, smoother quality video and has the ability to create your own play lists.

They have kept the live streaming which is linked straight to an asx file, unfortunately for now it doesn’t look there will be archived newscasts and Deco Drive broadcasts.

Shireen Sandoval Leaving

Two tipsters wrote in to say that word is out Shireen Sandoval is leaving WSVN, and the TV biz as a whole. Shireen’s husband is an agent at one of the big TV talent agencies and she’s going with him to New York City

Her last day at WSVN will probably be Thursday or Friday.

Florida GM Arrested for DUI; station doesn’t report

WJHG General Manager Tracy Connors has allegedly had a little run in with the law. She was arrested on DUI charges and for refusing a breathalyser test and resisting arrest in August. According to the police report the cop had to ask her 5 times to step out of the car before removing her from the car with the help of another cop.

Her charges were later reduced to reckless driving and a $500 fine.

Not surprising this story was kind of swept under the rug and allegedly not given any airtime by her station, WJHG. The Florida News Center blog reports that according to sources, WMBB was ready to run with the arrest when WJHG news director Tom Lewis, allegedly, called WMBB and asked the station not to run the story and they agreed. The Panama City News Herald, partner of WJHG, also didn’t report Connors’ DUI arrest.

Looks like someone forgot about the Internets, again

Florida News Center has more details on the story and links to the public Bay County records

Below is the video of Conners’ alleged post-arrest video:

10 Refreshes the Graphics

I just noticed WPLG have some new and refreshed graphics.

The open seems to be even shorter than it was before.

The over the shoulders are new, the lower thirds as well - they’ve actually shrunk them to make them less blocky than before.

A new ‘Local 10 Live’ bump, and ‘Coming Up’ graphics as well.

IMO they look very nice actually, I have to say the huge lower thirds are a welcome improvement considering how huge the previous ones were.

People Leaving, New Digs for some, and a Wedding

WFOR - Jason Wheeler is leaving this month; Elizabeth Hart noon meteorologist has left the TV biz; Marybel Rodriguez will be a new mom

WTVJ - Tom llamas and ‘7News at 4′ producer /don’t know her name/ got married recently, they met and worked together at MSNBC

WPLG - Several tipsters have told me that WPLG are close to announcing they are moving the studios to Broward. For now the rumor is that they’ve selected a site in Pembroke Park. The date of completion is set for 2009

WFOR’s Jeff Taylor Leaving for Chicago

CBS4’s weekend weather guy Jeff Taylor is leaving WFOR for WBBM, the CBS affiliate in Chicago where he will be the weekend mornings meteorologist

7’s New Site Debuts Soon

Forgot to post this.

I got a note saying WSVN’s new site is debuting on 9/29 and in addition to the new look, WorldNow channels and video (finally!) for the stories it will also have a web newscast.

Contrary to what I thought earlier, the site was developed internally. Don’t have info yet on whether or not they are keeping the live feed or not.

CW News Debuts

WB39 News is no more.
Tonight at 10pm CW News made its debut headed by Julia Yarbough. The new name and a new look. The lower third and bug have the same outline as the NBC6 graphics.

Strangely the graphics are a nice blue-ish hue with a light brown logo which I thought was great considering how green CW network is

If I can I’ll get some caps up

WBZL is WSFL

WBZL are renaming today to WSFL - as in WSouthFLorida hoping viewers will recognized it too and just in case CW tanks.

10’s Taxi Retires

That was a cool segment but it has come to an end. WPLG has retired the yellow cab, a 1967 Chevy Marathon.

Fortunately it didn’t go into a junk yard, Todd Tongen who also reported the segment and drove the taxi bought it for $510 bux. Cool!

Last September I got a tip from an insider who said that due to WPLG dropping the 5pm newscast Todd Tongen will be one of the people who will leave the station at the end of his contract.

7’s Style File Has New Graphics

They have updated the graphics to “Style File” to something very glassy/reflective and shiny but that logo, again, looks a bit weird like it does in those ‘See it on 7′ promos. And I wish they’d drop that swoosh line, it’s overdone already - not cool.

They are getting very techy-looking over there, if the latest promos and bump graphics are any indication the new graphics package for 7 will be very shiny and CGI heavy, more so than it is now.

NBC To Stream Prime Time Shows. Free!

We are getting there. Slowly but surely cutting out the local stations and making it easier for people to watch the shows they want whenever they want.

Couple that with all big-box retailer PCs coming pre-loaded with Windows Media Center operating system by default, and soon Windows Vista, and a video-out connection which only needs a cable it’s getting ever easier to plug the PC to the TV and display that streaming content.

Elita Loresca in FHM

If you haven’t heard by now Elita Loresca won a vote for America’s sexiest newscaster and did a few photos for FHM and an interview.

This would be the second time a WSVN weather gal has made it to the top of the poll, in 2004 Jackie Johnson was voted Sexiest Weather Gal in Playboy.

I’d rather see some of the guys but to me Elita’s photos aren’t as sexy as I thought they would be, I think I thought they would be something like Maxim. Still not bad - my favorite would have to be photos #1 and #3

Now when are some of the dudes going to do a Matt Lauer one? :D
