UPDATE: More talent layoff news after the jump below.

Breaking news now confirmed by SFLTV.com: Major talent layoffs at WTVJ NBC6 today. Shocked tipsters are telling SFLTV.com that longtime anchor and South Florida icon/news legend Kelly Craig was laid off from the station early Monday afternoon. You heard right. The anchor that has been there since April of 1990 was laid off. Joining in this major round of lay-offs are weekday morning reporter Joe Carter, and Andrea Brody, the only female sports anchor at WTVJ. SFLTV is told that these layoffs were all most likely due to the economy.
Talent wasn’t the only cost-cutting item to go. SFLTV.com has confirmed that WTVJ has canceled the NBC6 weekend morning newscast.
We observed this “Tweet” by WTVJ executive producer Tammy Delgado, which seemed to originally confirm the suspicion of the layoffs:
“I hate today.. hate it.. hate it.. hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Tammy would be the producer in charge of both Kelly Craig and Joe Carter. As of 3:30 PM on 6/29, their bios have been removed.
We contacted Ms. Craig and received this response:

News Never Stops at WSVN, and their graphics staff never sleep either.
Barely six months after the launch of HD (in January 2009) and a whole makeover to go with it, on Friday during the afternoon news WSVN debuted new hurricane graphics and updated weather graphics.

The virtual weather set has been redesigned, no more walking on a big giant circle seven by Ferro and the rest of the weather talent. Most of the blue is gone, in its place a lot of black and red.
Overall good eye candy as expected I suppose. Not having the big giant silver 7 on the “floor” is a lot less distraction and shiny. Much more watchable in 16:9 than 4:3

MSNBC HD New Graphics
Caught a glimplse on MSNBC of their new graphics. They’ve been testing them all day on Sunday before the official launch on Monday (June 29,2009) which is also when they’ll be broadcasting in high definition.
They’ve gone the opposite direction of bold, flashy and loud. The colors are a bit sterile using a faded silver/gray as the base. The lower thirds are the same shape as CNN’s and (I think) using the same technology. They’ve replaced the time bug with a long bar at the top of the screen showing the channel slogan, time and rather big logo. Not sure I’m too crazy about it
After the jump a video from the 10:30pm east coast time news update:

WJW FOX 8 Cleveland, OH does a story on a local bear in the woods. Must watch!
That really aired on TV, all 2 minutes of it. And TV newsers say Miami is the most ridiculous market in the country.
According to TMZ.com, pop-star Michael Jackson has passed away at age 50. The local news coverage is as follows:
**CONFIRMED** By LA Times, and NBC News: Michael Jackson IS dead at age 50.
WFOR: has still not reported that he has officially “died.” Still only saying that he is hospitalized.
WTVJ: is saying that, “although NBC has not been able to confirm this, the gossip website TMZ.com is reporting that Michael Jackson has passed away.”
UPDATE: WTVJ just ran a promo for their 7PM show, confirming his death. ON THE 7PM SHOW: They had a HD liveshot from NBC (or KNBC?) reporter Jinah Kim. They are also having their health reporter, to explain what sudden cardiac arrest is. Also explaining how “AED defibrillators” are the only way to save someone suffering from the cardiac arrest, with only 3-5 minutes to act. Saying: “WTVJ just installed them at the studio.”
WSVN: was first on Twitter to link to TMZ saying he was dead – haven’t seen any TV coverage about it.
UPDATE: 7 just had a “News Alert” to confirm. WSVN staying with breaking news past 7pm
WPLG: only reporting on the hospitalization.
_______
MSNBC quoting: LA Times, saying that he is in a coma… Not dead.
Today Show’s Twitter: cites TMZ in saying Michael Jackson has died.
NBC Nightly News, CBS Evening News, and ABC’s World News: Reports that Michael Jackson IS dead.
NO cable news station has quoted nor cited TMZ. (Update:) However, they have now been able to confirm via NBC News and LA Time sources.
CNN Reports: Michael Jackson is in a coma. Now reports death as well.
With the Internet, and websites like Twitter – Even TV news seems dated… Not to mention print newspapers? HA!

I was reading the TVSpy.com forums recently and someone mentioned that NBC’s Locals Only sites were a flop and lost traffic after the switch from regular TV station branded sites.
So I decided to do some digging and compare how the Miami station web sites rank against each other, mostly for my own amusement.
This comparison is based on public data from Quantcast. Both NBCMiami.com and JustNews.com track their web traffic using a pixel on their sites and the analytics are publically available. However, from personal experience the numbers are probably a little lower than what the stations see with their private web analytics tools.
Right off the bat … JustNews.com wins quite handily. In total traffic terms, WPLG’s site has about 1.7 million readers monthly vs 417,326 for WTVJ.

It doesn’t take a genius to realize that there has been a severe decline in quality at what was once was the envy to all TV stations around the country. I remember speaking to a long-time WTVJ tipster, who said that when they first joined the station, they had this excitement because she was joining ‘the famous WTVJ – the first in Miami!’ When did NBC6 become the laughingstock of the nation? When did WTVJ stop being “South Florida’s News Leader?” When did the famous WTVJ become a station NBC Universal is dying to drop?
How the hell did this happen?
A lot of people have different opinions of when this astounding decline began – what’s your take?
