Brian Andrews’ RCN Newscast Gets Some Mojo; Jim Robinson Joins

Former WFOR photojournalist Jim Robinson, aka the news mojo, recently joined Brian Andrews’ RCN News in English newscast as a South Florida based correspondent.

Jim shoots, edits and reports stories from South Florida then uploads the file to Bogota, Colombia where Brian Andrews and the RCN News in English team are based. US Americans call that a VJ (video journalist) or one-man band, which we’ll probably see a lot more at local stations in the future.

Jim was a photojournalist at WFOR and worked with Brian Andrews until Brian left CBS4 and moved to Colombia. Last year he became the station’s first mobile journalist (hence the mojo moniker) but ended up laid off at the end of 2008 when CBS went trough yet another round of layoffs at their local stations .

Brian’s creation has grown like weeds since it launched an year and a half ago. What started as one-man band web newscast, with just one video a day, is now supported by 14 staff members who write, edit, report, encode video, upload and perform hosting duties for the newscast. They’re also adding video twice or more a day and in addition to news there are also entertainment reports, plus even if you have no interest in Colombian news you can check out some some of the stories on life in Colombia.

Recently RCN redesigned the site with a new look and its own domain name, ColombiaNews.tv. And also (my personal obsession) added a new large video player with big, clear video that doesn’t look like a postage stamp on my 27″ monitors unlike say some local stations. (WFOR and WSVN I’m looking at you!)

As a web geek I really like seeing how they grew backwards, if you will, at least by traditional TV standards, going from the web to now getting aired on RCN’s global channel TV Colombia as well as on those TV screens tucked in the headrests of Avianca Airlines’ airplane seats.

WTVJ’s Carlos Vergara Joins RCN News in English

Carlos Vergara has left WTVJ and is now part of the RCN News in English team as a reporter, or contributor as Brian Andrews referred to him.

And here is his demo reel he posted on YouTube:

Brian Andrews’ News In English Is Growing

Brian Andrews’ news in English is growing. As you may know, the RCN webcast from Colombia is a pre-recorded show posted on the RCN website. In a few months, I’m hearing they’ll be adding an additional webcast, and a 30 minute newscast on RCN’s new 24-hour international channel.

Keep up-to-date on all of this at Brian’s blog, facebook, or website. Good luck with the expansion!

RCN News In English, the Promos

So RCN’s English newscast with Brian Andrews is on and the promos are ready. It July 1st. I think the newscast will be updated twice daily.

From Brian’s blog post it looks like they’ll be using the very nice FlowPlayer which has a video embedding feature.

And he’s staying in Colombia, so that’s all cleared up.

Update:Brian Andrews Not Interviewing at CBS3 Philly

Update 6.16.08: Okay so Brian left a message saying this isn’t accurate, and that he didn’t mention KYW on his blog which is true and I appologise.

He has signed with RCN and the English newscast starts June 30th.

The reason for jumping the gun like that was a blog on June 13th about flying to Philly to “explore a job opportunity”, link below.

google’s cache of the post can be seen here

Google’s Blog Alerts emailed me the above mentioned blog postat 12:34pm on June 13th tripping the WFOR keyword so I checked it out and then along with the person who left the tip I jumped the gun and assumed wrongly that Philly meant KYW. I was wrong and I apologise, no harm meant.

Brian Andrews Joins Colombia’s RCN Network

Four months after leaving WFOR CBS 4 for Colombia Brian Andrews has landed a permanent gig with Colombia’s largest TV network RCN.

He’ll produce a series called “Colombia through my eyes” and will be “basically driving all over the country for the next two months, stopping off in small towns along the way, telling unique stories”.

Also, in a few months Brian will begin anchoring “Colombia Now” RCN’s first daily English-language newscast.

He’s also freelancing for Al-Jazeera and says on his blog Colombia’s Semana Magazine is interested in a daily web-based English newscast.

Tomorrow Last Day for Brian Andrews at WFOR

Brian Andrews signs off from WFOR tomorrow, Wednesday the 28th.
In the morning he’ll be on The Footy Show on WIOD 610 – sometime between 09 and 12pm. He leaves for Caracas on Friday.

And since he’s freelancing chances are high we’ll be seeing him on stations other than WFOR as well.

You can keep an eye on his big move at his new blog and site

Brian Andrews Ditches WFOR

A few people emailed saying word on the street among reporters the past several days was that Brian Andrews was fired or left WFOR.

Joan Fleischman’s column from yesterday’s Miami Herald confirms it. Brian Andrews has ditched WFOR two months after signing another 3-year contract with them. He’s selling everything and moving to Bogota, Columbia!

Crazy boy. He’ll take Spanish lessons and freelance before looking for a more serious job. His last day at WFOR is November 28.
