Crazy Sweeps Month Ends Tonight

November sweeps are ending tonight, and all the crazy stories, at least ’till February.

I think it will probably the same old, if any stations come on top it won’t be by a big margin.

Who do you think won the November ‘06 sweeps?

WSVN Alum Becomes WHDH GM

Randi Goldklank was named the new WHDH General Manger after long-time GM Mike Carson announced he’s leaving in July of next year.

At 38, Goldklank will be the youngest station GM in the area.

Currently she’s the director of sales at WHDH and has worked at WSVN before moving to Boston. One interesting tid bit from the Boston Herald:

Goldklank’s youth could come in handy in figuring out where the media industry is heading, Ansin said. “We’re in a business that’s changing rapidly and she has the capacity to recognize change and adapt to change,” he said.

7News/7Sports Banned From Miami Dolphins Practice

A 7News photog was present during Dolphin practice yesterday and filmed one of the players doing the regular peptalk yelling profanities at the top of his lungs.

7News aired the video during all its newscasts even though Saban and Dolphins PR people objected

Before showing the video Steve Shapiro joked about it saying that Dolphins coach and PR people did not want 7News showing the video but that “that is two good reasons why we are running the story” after the video aired Shapiro joked that “I never was able to take orders”.

That allegedly sent the Dolphins whining and banning 7News crews from Dolphins Practice.

7News has aired video with profanity laced peptalks from Dolphins training before without any repercussions.

Judging by the report they aired at 5pm 7News aren’t losing any sleep over the ban at all. They remain totally unapologetic.

4 Pimps Itself Sooo Much

I stayed on Oprah today and noticed that towards 5pm CBS4 was pimping themselves like crazy.

Today they must have repeated that temperatures are falling and will have it all at 5pm probably 3 or 4 times. Twice during the adbreaks and twice using lower third bars during Oprah.

Too much and so fucking annoying - makes me want to have a DVR in every room

Terrible Sound on WSVN Analog/Comcast

The sound on the analog WSVN channel 7 on Comcast, sounds terrible. Sounds a lot like a very compressed web video or even like it’s coming thru a phone.

WPLG intros web-only content

WPLG are smartening up and starting early on the web-exclusive content.

They have introduced a new feature exclusive to their web site called i-News. According to them it will feature videos and photos of all kinds of stories with local emphasis, and behind the scenes stuff.

WPLG has named Alex Alvarez to be the ”digital correspondent” and he will be creating and reporting the content.

Digital Simulcasting Appears to Be On

In the last few weeks I’ve noticed Comcast has been turning digital simlucasting for channels 2-79 on. First I noticed CNN, now MSNBC has been digitized as well.

On the local side My33 used to be unwatchable on my DVR now it’s clear and shiny as glass. WFOR, WTVJ and WPLG are also digitally simulcasted while WSVN is not yet.

The difference is quite noticeable, at least on my 21″ LCD the pictures are sharp with no artifacts and much better sound.

Download NBC Nightly News

Finally NBC has debuted NBC Nightly News as a downloadable video podcast.

ABC News already have a video podcast called World News Now which is separate from the early evening newscast.

Something else that caught my eye WNBC have a new podcast called “Better Health”.

Miami stations nowhere to be found.

Download link for NBC Nightly News from iTunes Alternatively you can go to this page and download whenever you want.

More New Graphics on 7

Now the time bug has been slightly redone with more rounded corners and some bevel.

Also the tease for the 11pm newscast has a whole new look, different from the 10pm, and it may be what the new opens will look like.

Online Election Coverage

I didn’t watch a peep from election coverage on any station, local or cable too busy catching up on SciFi and podcasts. But I did check out their sites.

CBS4.com was the first place I checked for results - and it kind of became my favorite stop to keep an eye on what’s up as I watched SciFi channel on the side.

Local10.com also had an easy to find straight forward way displaying election results.

WSVN.com … well it looked really half-assed effort with some tiny links to government sites for the election results! Not cool.

And then there’s NBC6.net. I tried playing ‘where’s the link’ a couple times and just gave up. Even on my 21″ LCD monitor I got eye strain trying to find what I was looking for. I liked their site initially but now … not so much.

MSNBC and Yahoo on the other hand did a great job. On the local level KING5.com left me thinking they were the most dedicated to election coverage for the web.

What about you? Did you use the web or TV for your election info? Who did you watch? Mouth off in the comments

NBC6 Renamed 11p Newscast?

Caught some of the 11pm newscast promos on 6 and I think they’ve started calling it ‘South Florida Tonight’ instead of NBC6 News at 11

New 10pm Tease Graphics on 7; Preview of What’s To Come

The 10pm teaser tonight had a whole new look.

Lots of CGI, a magnified 7 logo for the background done in a black/red/blue gradient.

Earlier in the day they debuted new graphics for the web site which look very similar to the teaser so I think it’s definitely a sign of things to come very very soon
