WPLG Keeping Sports on, Barely

Some more details on WPLG letting John Henry Smith go and scraping Sports Sunday show courtesy the Miami Herald

Sports Sunday was replaced by paid programming a.k.a. infomercials. WPLG GM Dave Boylan says he’s not proud of that but the show cost the station more to produce than they took in advertising. The decision not to renew John Henry Smith was economical.

Will Manso will be the only sports guy at WPLG, and Boylan says the sports segment in the newscasts is not going anywhere. John Henry Smith is leaving the station July 1 and before that when he’s off Charles Perez will be filling in for him.

Dave Boylan also told the Herald he’s not ruling out bringing back Sports Sunday sometime in the future.

NBC6’s New Partner

3e4rty

NBC6 has a new news partner. The South Florida Times (see mission statement below) is a primarily African American newspaper.

The South Florida Times is a newspaper that is designed to “Elevate the Dialogue” throughout the African Diaspora. We will change the conversation in our community by providing an in-depth analysis of events that occur anywhere in the world and thereby establish their relevance to the life and culture of our people. We will ensure that principles of integrity, journalism, and truth are maximized in each word that is written and in each act that is undertaken. Through these means we will positively affect the lives of people from within the Diaspora and we will illuminate for those outside an accurate portrayal of our culture and our lives.

Who we are

The South Florida Times is the most influential weekly newspaper in South Florida serving the African-American and Caribbean community. The South Florida Times is the primary source for mainstream media in gauging the pulse of the urban community. In fact, news stories about or from the South Florida Times have appeared in the Washington Post, New York Times, Miami Herald, Sun-Sentinel, St. Petersburg Times and other major dailies across the country. No other weekly newspaper in South Florida has garnered such notoriety. It’s the weekly the dailies read. It’s the paper people talk about, quote and read in political, social and business circles in South Florida.

Our Readers

Each and every week we deliver 25,000 papers which are read by over 80,000 people throughout our community. Our distribution channels include newsracks, restaurants, small businesses, libraries, colleges and schools, subscriptions, targeted home delivery, and bulk deliveries to African-American and Caribbean Churches throughout Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties. South Florida Times can now be found in Publix Supermarkets!

Your Market

Today, people of the black and caribbean community represent nearly 30 percent of the residents living in Broward County. Broward’s black population has increased by 70,000 additional black residents since the 2000 Census, raising the total number to over 450,000. This has made Broward the county with the fastest growing population of Blacks in Florida. Broward also has the second fastest growing Black population in the country behind only New York.

What are your thoughts on the new partnership?

A better time a NBC6…

(2000) Gerri Helfman and Kelly Craig, nice!

“Free Condoms! Free Condoms!” Old people having sex!

“Free condoms, free condoms! Protect yourself!”

NBC6 wants you to know about old people doing “it.” Thank you, NBC6. At 7PM, just as I’m finishing dinner and getting an after dinner treat, I really want to think about Grandma and Grandpa having sex! Thanks!

WSVN and Q McCray Part Ways, Move Roy Ramos Behind the Scenes

As of Tuesday Q McCray is no longer with WSVN. Tipster tells us management told him he was being let go at the end of last year. McCray was supposed to be Joel Brown’s replacement when he left WSVN for CBS Newspath but that never happened.

Andre Hepkins according to the tipster is now officially Brown’s replacement.

Roy Ramos who reported for WSVN was a freelancer. WSVN took him off air but he’s still with 7 behind the scenes.

Q McCray will be reporting for WFTV in Orlando starting sometime in March.

About the “new” SFLTV look…

Hi Folks,

No need to e-mail us, we know about the few bugs with the new site look. The site brokedown, and we’re working to fix it back to original state, as soon as WordPress comes out with their new version. We’ll see what we can do about restoring the author (who posted) name to the posts.

Thanks!

WPLG Can Hear The Bells…

wplgnewsroom

The above is an artists rendering of the new WPLG studio. Remind you of anything? Feels a tad like a church if you ask me. If the final installation matches the renders, it is certainly going to be the most… colorful… set in South Florida. My problem is it seems too bright. I’m not sure how I feel about waking up at 5a.m. to that.

Another photo after the jump: Continue reading ‘WPLG Can Hear The Bells…’

Unconfirmed: Tom Doerr Out at WFOR;Position Eliminated by CBS

update: Scott from FTVLive tells us that CBS eliminated the position Tom Doerr held, VP and station manager, and there won’t be a replacement. I still think there’s a marked improvement at least in the story selection so he did something right, if CBS weren’t so stingy that studio should be tore down and replaced with something better.

We’re hearing from sources at other stations in town that Tom Doerr WFOR’s station manager and vice president has left. Doerr was brought in 2006 to help bring the station’s sagging ratings up.

We reported on February 17, 2008 that WFOR management was given a warning to improve the situation or changes will be made. The information then was that “one of them won’t be there by years end…” if things didn’t improve. Whether or not Doerr’s departure had anything to do with WFOR’s ratings we can’t confrim.

Unfortunately whoever replaces Doerr will will probably make changes, yet again, to CBS4 News.

Actually, I checked out some of their recent stories and they seem to have some very interesting, very local-oriented stories.
