Update: The case against Rob Schmitt was dismissed on 3/19/2009 for lack of evidence. Smith’s bond and and pre-trial were canceled.
update 9:33pm: so far it looks as though we’re the only ones with this info. WTVJ usually reports local newsies getting in trouble but this time nothing. WFOR hasn’t done it either. WSVN passes on other station’s public personnel matters and has for a while.
And to the best of our knowledge WPLG had no mention of their reporter getting arrested at 6pm.
Anonymous tipster just alerted me that WPLG’s Rob Schmitt was arrested yesterday.
According to the booking info on the Metro-Dade corrections site, Schmitt was booked at 10:29 this morning yesterday on alleged battery/domestic violence charges.
He has been released on his own recognaissance with $1500 bond

Allegedly they’re taking Rob’s bio off the site and “managers are flipping out” according to the tipster.
Schmitt joined WPLG in January of 2008.

How is that news? I mean South Beach is one of the Gay capitals of the world. It’s long overdue that there were 2 main anchors that are gay. I mean this is the 16th biggest market. I think news would be two lead gay anchors in the 90th market in a small hick town.

Jeff Weinsier was NOT arrested for bringing a gun but for refusing to move from a public sidewalk when the officer’s ego got bruised.
The gun was found after the arrest and they tried but failed to nail him for it.
Now, that a lot of the media reported he got cuffed because of the gun is another matter but it’s not true

Nope. I haven’t heard anything. I think WPLG likes how quiet this is. No one has covered it other then us…. and those other sites who have covered it, only got the story from us… so it’s pretty low publicity and thats what they like. If the newspapers picked up on it, all hell would have broken loose and Rob would’ve been gone.

The girl then called the cops because she started to bleed, the cops arrived, and arrested him, believing her side of the story.
