update 9/22 4:05pm: graphics are live as of 4pm. They updated the open, it is very short. The music is what WHDH has been using since April or May, the lower thirds and over the shoulders are also new buy most other elements have been kept.
Unlike the last time, this time after just 2 years and change WSVN are unleashing a flashy new on-air look that should go live this week (or tomorrow when X Factor hype starts). The Tron graphics, as our readers affectionately dubbed them because of the thick, blue, neon rings in the news open, have been in use since January 2009 when 7News went HD and after that 8-year long period in which they kept the all-red and chrome theme but only changed some elements like bumpers.
WSVN’s new graphics come on the heels of a refresh at sister station WHDH in Boston, which they’ve tested and tweaked since May before they finally settling on a rather uninspiring new look that feels a bit rushed and unfinished. Also featuring an extra short open that can’t be longer than about 3-4 seconds!
