5 CBS4 Journalists Honored Today

Ileana Varela, photojournalists Rafael Murciano and Manny Alvarez, Michael Williams and Michele Gillen will be awarded the Silver Circle Award today by NATAS for significant contributions to television. Former UofM professor Carolyn Cefalo will also receive the award.

The even is taking place today at 7pm at the Doral Resort and Spa and will be streamed live online on CBS4.com

Merlo’s Menu and Lucho’s Lineup

CBS4.com has a new online feature, actually it’s not brand new it started March 31st I think. You could call it a video blog, it is a daily video from CBS4 managing editor Alissa Merlo or assignment editor Lucho Duran (?) giving a short preview of what stories CBS4 is working on for their newscasts.

And you get to hear what a crazy place the CBS4 newsroom is. Scanners chirping non-stop. So crazy, they must hear them in their sleep too. [CBS4.com video: Merlo's Menu] /via Owenized/

Pope in US: Local Coverage

WFOR: Doesn’t appear that they’ve sent any local reporters to follow the Pope. Online on CBS4.com has a special section on the Papal Visit featuring photo slideshows and video reports

WTVJ: Reporter Tom Llamas will be following the Pope’s visit for WTVJ with reports during newscasts. He is also blogging. NBC6.net also have a special section dedicated to the Pontiff’s visit with images and videos. Also a BlogBurst feed from

WSVN: Channel 7 has been hyping their Papal visit coverage for several days now. Dave Kartunen will be filing reports during 7News from DC and New York. WSVN.com no special section dedicated to the Pope’s visit but there are front page reports with video. Right side column features an Associated Press video feed that will also be live during scheduled events

WPLG: They too have not sent a dedicated reporter to cover the Pope. Local10.com has a similar section dedicated to the Pope’s visit with video and image highlights and reports.

It doesn’t appear that any of the Palm Beach stations have sent their own reporters and they aren’t doing that much online either. The Pope’s visit isn’t even on the front page of the station’s web sites as of this post.

Grid Problems Cause Fla. Power Outages, Shut Down Nuclear Plant

Overall if you were lucky to have power and internet at work, or got suck with only your mobile device in the middle of I-95, you would’ve gotten plenty of details regarding the power outage from the local news sites, the tv ones in this case.

CBS4.com as usual had pretty extensive coverage, and lots of information on their front page, updated frequently with text and lots of video. CNN.com gave them a nice visible link in the breaking news report. NBC6.net didn’t have much fanfare on the front page besides a link to an extended story and live video from the on-air coverage.

WSVN.com didn’t fare too well today. If the tipster was correct, their site crashed really hard from the sudden influx of visitors, probably everyone trying to watch the live stream. When I tried to hit them up around 3:15pm the page wouldn’t load at all, few minutes later only some parts of it did. And they probably couldn’t even update the site because when it came online it had nothing regarding the outage besides the flash player on the left with a screen shot of Mayor Alvarez presser but even that would show as not available when I pressed play.

Local10.com offered live streaming of their on-air coverage too, along with frequent updates on the site itself, and they too got a nice juicy link from CNN.com’s report.

News in Spanish Now on CBS4.com

Saw this while browsing CBS4.com today. It’s a (new?) news section on CBS4.com in Spanish. No idea what it says but at this time the top story on the page has something to do with Toshiba, Sony and Blu-Ray disk.

This was on posted under ‘More from CBS4.com’ on the front page

MSNBC Redesign is Live

And looking pretty good.

On another note CBS4.com received a minor refresh last week or so, as did most other CBS-owned O&O sites.
