Happy New Year!

Happy New Year

Where did the year go? To think about all that has happened in just one year is really amazing. From the election of our new president, to more local issues like the sale of WTVJ (and the cancellation of it) it has truly been an interesting and busy year.

From all of us at SFLTV, have a great, happy, and most importantly, SAFE New Year!

Updated Newsplex Debuts

update 10:11pm: couple shots for those who didn’t see it. Sorry about the bad quality don’t have my firewire cable yet for better quality shots and video

Miami Herald Newspaper Legend Dies

I’m aware this isn’t about TV, so no need to tell me.

Alvah H. Chapman JR. died yesterday from reported complications of pneumonia. Chapman was the former Miami Herald president/CEO,  and was known as one of South Florida’s most influential corporate and civic leaders.

Via CBS4:

“Chapman became the unifying force behind scores of civic endeavors from housing the homeless to sculpting downtown Miami’s contemporary appearance to leading “We Will Rebuild” after Hurricane Andrew caused over $25-billion in destruction to the region in 1992.”

DeMarco Wants Back?!

So now that the sale is off, and things are looking up for WTVJ, (kind of…) apparently, Mr. DeMarco Morgan himself wants back in. Here’s the scoop. He algedly made a phone call late Tuesday night to the NBC 6 executive producer, and get this… allegedly wants back at WTVJ to host the 6, 7, and 11 PM news. Ha!  Now, the contract details allow for trading of on air talent  between NBC O&O stations, but i would be shocked if they let him. He bails out when the times are tuff, and then when everything is all better again, he wants back in? I don’t think so. DeMarco, as of now, is scheduled to started at WNBC a few weeks back.

Breaking News: Post Newsweek Backs Out of WTVJ Deal

Updated: 9:30 PM 12/23/2008

Breaking news: Announced late on the WTVJ 6PM news by Joel Connable. The sale of WTVJ, an NBC O&O station, has been called off by Post Newsweek.

In a joint statement issued today:

“The Washington Post company and NBC Local Media today announced that the intended sale of WTVJ to the Washington Post company will not move forward. Given the current economic environment, and the delay in receiving the necessary regulatory approval, the deal has been terminated. The purchase of WTVJ was scheduled to close by the end of 2008.”

This is great news for the folks against the sale of WTVJ, and it’s long history. There is no word yet if NBC will put WTVJ back up on the market, or retain it as an NBC O&O station. Tips have been coming in for about a week now, hinting that Post Newsweek would back out of the sale, thanks to a delayed FCC hearing… and today, it looks like they did. We’ll pass on the info as we receive it.

NBC6 Does Another DTV Test

Incase you haven’t heard, WTVJ is doing another DTV test tonight at 6:25PM. They said for those who are prepared for the transition, programing will appear normal. But for those who aren’t ready, a two minute  message will appear instead. No word on if all the stations are doing it as well.

WNBC Snags Another WTVJer

WNBC just snagged another WTVJ employee. This time, it’s management. Ilyas Kirmani, who joined WTVJ in 2005 from WHDH-TV, is leaving to be the new “dayside manager” (whatever that is) at WNBC. His last day is sometime in January, and no word when he starts at WNBC. I’m not really sure why everyone seems to be leaving for WNBC. Last time i checked, they’re not doing much better than WTVJ right about now.
