WSVN Suing Nielsen Over People Meters

Update: I’m still trying to find the lawsuit document.

So far we know that WSVN is asserting that Nielsen is abusing its monopoly power and overcharging for the ratings.

A story ran during 7News showed WSVN staff gathered in the newsplex as Ed Ansin delivered news of the lawsuit. Sunbeam claims when local people meters (LPMs) went live on October 1st 2008 WSVN’s ratings dropped by as much as 50% and now American Idol’s ratings for Miami/Ft. Lauderdale are down 40%. Other markets using LPMs have not experienced that drop. As a result of the ratings drop WSVN is losing over $1 million dollars per month from having to charge less for their advertising space.

Patrick Frasier who reported the news asked an interesting question, if the 50% drop in ratings is something normal that means that the previous diaries method Nielsen used for 30 years was flawed. And if the diaries method was accurate then that should mean the local people meters method is flawed. Nielsen maintains both measuring methods are accurate. That still doesn’t explain how the station lost 50% of its audience, in every demographic.

So far Sunbeam is going it alone and no other stations have joined.

Breaking News, via @WSVN and @Eglin: WSVN-TV is filing an anti-trust lawsuit against Nielsen Co. over the new ratings system. According to a tipster, WSVN had an “all hands on deck meeting at 3pm” on the matter. We’ll have more info soon.

I’ll explain. The big yellow and black one that says “Talk to Alex”… That would be mine. Did that clear things up? :)

Prosecutor: Shooting Spurred by WFOR’s Jim DeFede Report

jimdefedewfor

According to The Miami New Times, Michael Von Zamft an assistant state attorney working on a January 23rd drive by shooting in Liberty City, in which someone opened fire with an AK-47 on a group of young men playing craps and killing two, says it’s his opinion a report by WFOR’s Jim DeFede is to blame for a second attack that happened recently.

In the story the mother of one of the two boys shot and killed openly criticised her neighbors for not coming forward with information about the January shooting. Her face and street address number were shown uncensored.

In the same story another woman who remained anonymous claimed at first she knew who killed her rapper friend, the January 23rd shooting allegedly happened as retaliation to his murder, and pointed out one of the boys as the killer but later backtracked saying she wasn’t sure.

Several days after the story aired on WFOR someone stopped in front of the mother’s home and opened fire on a group of young men standing in front, injuring five.

Michael Von Zamft told The Miami New Times he believes the second shooting was spurred by WFOR’s story because of the theory about the January shooting and because of the interview with the mother infront of her home.

On his part DeFede says his story may have contributed to the attack. His full response can be read here the police however have yet to officially link the two shootings.

First on SFLTV: WTVJ’s Paul Deanno Heading to Seattle

paul_deanno-for-web We are hearing that WTVJ’s chief meteorologist Paul Deanno will be heading to Seattle. He will be the morning meteorologist at KOMO, the ABC affiliate.

Interesting development since recently word got out that KOMO’s current morning meteorologist Jim Castillo may be leaving the station.

The move is actually a homecomming of sort since Deanno is from the area.

SFLTV Exclusive Update: I’ve obtained e-mail he sent out to the station. Read it below.

Cop Arrests KVIA TV Crew

update: Police chief says Sgt. Raul Ramirez “somewhat overreacted”. The investigation is continuing while the officer is on desk duty and because apparently some idiots nearby support the cop’s actions!!

The chief says he’s concerned of the cop’s selective enforcement because all other bystanders were not told to move!

Belligerent cop arrests KVIA reporter Darren Hunt AND the photog Ric Dupont for doing what he told them.
