Kevin Corke Debuts on WTVJ

Kevin Corke

The highly anticipated Kevin Corke is set to debut tonight on WTVJ. SFLTV.com told you about him last October when WTVJ announced Corke as Julia Yarbough’s replacement. Corke (pictured to the left) has anchored the news desk for NBC’s ‘Today Show’ as well as on MSNBC. According to the Sun-Sentinel, Corke will be hosting the 7 & 11 newscasts. This leaves the question as of who will host with Nespral on the 6PM show, or if she will continue to solo-host it. WTVJ is banking on Corke for ratings. Expect promos in the coming weeks about how experienced (at the national level) Corke is, and how trusted he should be. But is this enough to draw in ratings? Will Corke be enough to pull WTVJ out of dead last place? What do you think?

Lane Michaelsen Jumps on Sinking Ship; New ND at WTVJ

Last night at around 4PM, the news broke that Lane Michaelsen has been named the new news director at WTVJ, NBC6. The fact that we didn’t find out about this weeks ago just goes to show you that it was sealed pretty tightly. Michaelsen comes from WUSA in DC.  This article appeared in here TV NewsCheck:

“Lane Michaelsen is joining local NBC O&O WTVJ Miami (DMA 16) as its vice president news and content. Lane fills the role left vacant when Yvette Miley was promoted to MSNBC in New York earlier this year.

Michaelsen joins the station from his position as vice president of the information center at Gannett’s WUSA Washington. While at WUSA, and during his tenure with Gannett Broadcasting, he had oversight of multiple stations’ news operations, co-created and executed the company’s journalists in the United States and England, and implemented change in the focus of all news platforms.”

Shocking fact here: he has an inside connection at WTVJ. Ardyth Diercks, the current WTVJ general manager, apparently had worked with Michaelson at Gannett earlier (almost 10 years ago) in her career.

NBC6’s John Morales On-Air Today

John Morales’ first on-air day was today at 6PM. He wasn’t doing the promos for the 6PM shows; oddly enough Ryan Phillips (the AM weatherman) was doing them. He seemed tense and stiff on-air, perhaps his nerves got the best of him.

Good luck, John!

Former WHDH GM Randi Goldklank Lands at WPEC

Randi Goldklank at WHDH

Randi Goldklank has landed at WPEC as local sales manager. The Boston Herald outed her new job in an article yesterday titled Disgraced media gals get new gigs

Goldklank was the general manager of WHDH, WSVN’s sister station in Boston, but resigned last year after getting herself arrested at Boston’s Logan Airport for disorderly conduct. I’ll spare you the details but you can read them here Continue reading ‘Former WHDH GM Randi Goldklank Lands at WPEC’

Andre Hepkins, The Prodigal Son, Returns to WSVN

Andre Hepkins, who left WSVN in 2004 for nationally syndicated Celebrity Justice (I believe he was their New York reporter) is now back at WSVN. When CJ was canceled he stayed in NY as reporter for FOX affiliate WNYW but recently he and the station parted ways.

WSVN head mistress Alice Jacobs fired off an email to all the 7Newsies announcing his return calling him “the prodigal son” of 7News or something like that.

Celebrity Justice was hosted by another WSVN alum, Holly Herbert.

Andre Hepkins on 7News, HD, either today or Feb 18th. You are welcome.

*Why was she referring to him as the prodigal son?

Joshua Landon Joins NBC6

joshlandon1

A new reporter by the name Joshua Ufot, or Joshua Landon as you will soon know him, has joined WTVJ. He comes from WZVN, ABC7, in Fort Myers where he freelanced. From what I’ve heard, he’s full time at WTVJ, though it’s possible he’s freelanceing again. Unfortunately for him, being new and his reporting skills won’t be the only things people will be talking about. He was arrested on October 24th for an alleged DUI. His hearing on the case is set for December 12th.  That’s his mugshot photo above, taken at 3:30 AM on October 25th.

From News-Press:

“A Collier sheriff’s deputy picked up Landon after he was allegedly seen driving erratically on SR 90 according to the arrest report.”
His last day at the station was five days later. ABC7 managers declined to talk about Landon’s departure, and Landon couldn’t be reached for comment.

So we don’t really know if him leaving ABC7 is related to the DUI. Welcome to NBC6, Josh…

Though we should mention, he has pleaded not guilty, and his case is still pending. The hearing is set for December 12th.

Another new face at NBC6, Joe Carter and his segment Carter’s Clicks. For a station going under, they’re sure hiring like crazy. Basically, Joe Carter’s job is to report on websites that viewers send in via e-mail to joe.carter@nbc.com. Hmm, SFLTV is a website! Maybe he should feature us? He comes from Greenville, SC as a former sports guy. He is even already filling in for anchors on the NBC6 morning show. My thoughts about Carter? I like him, he reads with his own style, and would make a great anchor… one day. Has anyone else seen him in the AM?

Lots of changes at NBC6!

Vanessa Ruiz Returns To 7

Vanessa Ruiz who left Channel 7 in January of this year to finish her college degree has returned to 7News.

She will be freelancing and going to school. Look for her mostly on the weekend editions of 7News

Confirmed: Gwen Belton at CBS4

Former Local 10 reporter Gwen Belton left WPLG in 2005 after her contract expired. Soon after, she joined CBS News, and now it is going local again. The CBS4 news director sent out a memo saying she was hired. No word of when she starts, or what her position will be. Gwen will be a reporter and fill in anchor, and is said to start sometime in September. Welcome back to South Florida, Gwen.

You can still read her WPLG profile, here.

/Thanks, tipsters!/

While keeping an eye on WTVJ’s on-again off-again problems this afternoon I notice that Blake Burman who joined WSVN from NBC2 in Ft. Myers, Florida is now at 7. He started July 7th.
