New WSVN Reporter

He goes by Roy Ramos and made his WSVN debut at 6:09pm during 7news at 6. Don’t know much about him or who he replaced

WSVN’s HD Control Room

Yesterday during the 4pm news Reed Cowan popped up from the recently renovated for HD control room.

As part of the transition to digital and WSVN’s move to broadcast news in HD they swapped the tiny CRT monitors with broadcast-grade LCD monitors.

Sorry about the camera photo my DVR is being Comcastic again.

Rick Sanchez Still Thinking of 7

Rick Sanchez during CNN coverage of Obama speech:

You’re watching Barack Obama at the Jefferson Jackson Dinner in Indianapolis. This is a key primary state. And you are also watching 7 News here … uh, I mean, CNN, tonight at 10 o’clock as we bring you this story and many others. Stay with us. We’ll be right back.

Even after 7 years away from WSVN, he still can’t shake the 7News off. Rick told the Miami Herald it’s not the first time he had a Freudian slip like that

A WSVN HD Update

I have a minor update on WSVN’s HD transition.

No exact date still but most likely before or after the Olympics, which begin August 8.

One of the last things delaying them is the lack of HD graphics. WSVN’s graphic department is too busy with everything else. Several creative directors leaving hasn’t helped things either

I’m told WHDH and WSVN’s graphics package will be almost identical though.

Speaking of WHDH, Boston TV blog The Scoop says WHDH will be HD by July 15th. They’re putting up a green screen behind the anchor desk after sweeps with a pre-recorded loop of the newsplex while work is being done to the studio. Mainly removing the TV wall and replacing it with a giant projection screen!

Help Me Howard is One Good Hippie

Howard Finkelstein, better known to most as the Howard in ‘Help Me Howard’, WSVN’s hugely popular newscast segment, is getting some well deserved praise.

The South Florida Times has a very nice story about him and his many efforts to assure that everyone has access to a public defender, but especially the poor and homeless who can’t afford high-powered lawyers. In recognition for those efforts on April 26th the League of Women Voters of Broward County awarded Finkelstein the Civics in Action award.

Finkelstein is “one of the original hippies” says Douglas Brawley Chief Assistant Public Defender of Mental Health adding “he’s about peace, love, equality for all people. He hasn’t sold out.”

And from the article it’s clear Howard is the real deal. He is the founder of the country’s first court for mentally ill defendants. He established Broward county’s drug court and after becoming the county’s Chief Public Defender in 2005 Finkelstein put measures in place that allowed defendants to spend more time with their public defenders where previously they were forced to decide their pleas after just a few minutes. Showing the SWAT Dragging a Dead Person

Yesterday the swat team shot a guy dead and a nearby witness recorded the whole thing with his camera from his balcony. 7News used parts of the recording in their report.

Including what you see below. The swat team dragging the dead man’s body, face down, over the asphalt. Uncensored, unpixelated, unblurred. I added the pixelation in Photoshop.

They have now run this video at least 3 times. Last night at 10pm, maybe at 11pm too, and already twice this morning so it can’t be an accident or an oversight on their part. It’s deliberate.

Now, I’m no prude by any stretch of the imagination and I’m most definitely not easily offended (offendable?). Easily pissed off maybe but as far as offending me it’ll take all 4 TV networks at once and a lot of trying to do it. And I happen to think reports from Iraq are too sanitized.

But when I saw Rene Marsh’s report on 7News this morning and this poor guy’s body dragged over the pavement face down without even a little pixelation I was like “What the fuck were they thinking?”. And not only in my mind.

And I don’t know what they were thinking. If they were even thinking at all. It pissed me off enough to write this post and edit it 4 times already due to too much “bad” language.

I like my 7News, but this stunt was stupid, over the top and dare I say disgusting. And just plain idiotic. Or maybe I’m too sleep deprived and over reacting.

What do you think? Am I right? Wrong? Whiny? Should the 7News editors have ran the video in the first place or at least added some pixelation?

You can watch the report on WSVN’s site here and judge for yourself

Channels 4, 6 and 10 covered the story as well. Only WFOR, at least their 11pm story, used the same video footage from the witness but only the part where the body was laying near bushes and added a large blurred area to conceal it even though you could barely see it!

Pope in US: Local Coverage

WFOR: Doesn’t appear that they’ve sent any local reporters to follow the Pope. Online on CBS4.com has a special section on the Papal Visit featuring photo slideshows and video reports

WTVJ: Reporter Tom Llamas will be following the Pope’s visit for WTVJ with reports during newscasts. He is also blogging. NBC6.net also have a special section dedicated to the Pontiff’s visit with images and videos. Also a BlogBurst feed from

WSVN: Channel 7 has been hyping their Papal visit coverage for several days now. Dave Kartunen will be filing reports during 7News from DC and New York. WSVN.com no special section dedicated to the Pope’s visit but there are front page reports with video. Right side column features an Associated Press video feed that will also be live during scheduled events

WPLG: They too have not sent a dedicated reporter to cover the Pope. Local10.com has a similar section dedicated to the Pope’s visit with video and image highlights and reports.

It doesn’t appear that any of the Palm Beach stations have sent their own reporters and they aren’t doing that much online either. The Pope’s visit isn’t even on the front page of the station’s web sites as of this post.

7 Goes Hip, Adds Web Videos Segment

WSVN The Download

Just saw a promo on 7 for their “sizzling new segment” called “The Download”.

It will feature crazy videos from the web (read painting elephants, farting cats etc…) you’ve (probably) seen a million times before if your web diet consists of a lot of YouTube, Revision3, Digg and other such…

Mooses on the loose, cats on trees and dogs skateboarding not included.

And while they’re at it maybe they’ll kill that Seen on the Scene cheez. Really. You put the energy into this crap but won’t do anything about decodrive.com? Sheesh

The Download makes its first run tomorrow night at 10pm fronted by Louis Aguirre.

Have you noticed other stations adding segments for may sweeps? drop me a line here

update 04/02: first segment aired last night at 10pm and had only one “sizzling” video

5 Years

A month ago I was sifting trough my hard drives and came across some 7News promos. Mark Londner was in some of them. I ran his name trough google and this blog showed up, then and I got the urge to blog this little reminder, not sure why.

5 years ago on the morning of March 28 2003 Mark Londner passed away three days away from his 56th birthday. He was 7News’ senior reporter and was at channel 7 for about 30 years. They didn’t give the senior reporter title to anyone else after that.

In 2001 Mark won the Silver Circle Award, one of many including 10 emmies, and the Miami New Times named him best TV news reporter in 1999 and 2000 (see links below)

Mark died after a 3 long years battling melanoma.

Tiffany Tucker Leaving WSVN

Word’s out that Tiffany Tucker is leaving WSVN and taking a job for a station in Cleveland, OH.

Coming to 7

Reed Cowan currently a reporter at KTVX ABC4 in Salt Lake City is coming to WSVN and assuming anchor duties. I guess he’ll be anchoring Saturday Edition of Today in Florida? Adam Williams anchored that newscast until he moved to WHDH in Boston.
