Local Sweeps Ratings

23

November sweeps, along with the hype and crazy stories is thankfully over. Until February when TV stations have to do it all over again. FTVLive dropped the 25-54 demo ratings for the Miami market for November sweeps. They might be a little difficult to decipher by those not in the biz but I think the numbers on the right are the actual rating points? Not sure what the smaller numbers mean.

No surprises. WSVN leads at 6AM closely followed by WTVJ, leaving WPLG and WFOR behind. WPLG finished first at 11pm finishing first but oddly they are not number one at 6pm which if I remember correctly used to be the time slot where they always gained viewers, and finished first.

And then the Palm Beach ratings, showing WPBF’s marked improvement from a once third place station. It’s jarring to see just how dominating WPTV is. For example, the station starts with a 5.4 household rating at 5pm, and by 6pm they’re at 9.2 which is more than double WPBF and WPEC combined! WPTV leads in every single time slot. At noon WPEC comes close though, just tenth of a point separating the two.

CBS Investigating WFOR for Hostile Work Environment

CBS Investigating WFOR for Hostile Work Environment

Channel 4 is imploding on itself. CBS HQ has ordered an internal investigation of WFOR management, and the working atmosphere at the station, according to GossipExtra after hostile work environment accusations by employees. There are allegations that employees were told to work over time without pay.

CBS 4’s ratings have been in the gutter for a while, and stress levels in the newsroom are high. Recently the 11pm newscast producer quit right before air time because she was “fed up”. Then there’s the issue of pay, with on-air staff being told they have to take a pay cut, and some of them wondering whether they’ll even have a job come contract renewal time.

To make matters worse long timers have left the station. Shanno Hori, Jeff Berardelli, David Bernard. And then there’s Josh Benson’s strange firing. SFLTV thinks it’s because he was praising CBS arch rival Aereo, but the station denied the allegation and told us it was because he streamed CBS 4 newscasts without authorization. An odd reason, considering what Benson actually did was to embed the station’s publicly accessible video player on his own website.

Insiders have told me a few times that CBS management at HQ in New York City often doles out orders to local bosses about how they want things done, and overrides their decisions regularly, including hiring decisions and news story judgement. Unfortunately for them the Miami market is unique, and running it from out-of-town cookie-cutter style doesn’t produce great results. We have Spanish-language stations that are strong performers, and who attract sizable audiences. Whatever is left for English-language stations is dominated heavily by WSVN, which excels in the 25-54 demo for a while now. They’re also a stable, and predictable station that connects with viewers better the other outlets. And let’s not forget WTVJ, whose resurgence, deservedly so I would say, seems to have sucked viewers away not just from WFOR but also from WPLG.

Would WFOR recover?

Meteorologist Michael Smith Now at WFOR

Meteorologist Michael Smith Now at WFOR

Michael-Smith---26557269Yes, meteorologist Michael Smith is now part of the WFOR weather team. This is the station’s second hire of a former WPLG personality, the other one being John Guaraldi.

Smith was the weekend meteorologist at WPLG until earlier this year when he became the odd man out after Local 10 was ordered by corporate to shuffle their weather personalities around. He had a brief stint at the Weather Channel after leaving Channel 10.

No word yet on which time slot he’s taking, but our bet is that we’ll see him on weekday mornings when Lisette Gonzalez leaves on maternity in a few weeks.

David Bernard Signs Off WFOR

He came to South Florida way back in August of 2005 form WWL in New Orléans, right before Hurricane Katrina hit. Former WFOR hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross hired him as his eventual replacement.

Rumor has it the powers that be in New York City handed instructions to CBS4 management to dole out pay cuts, and according to the usual “people familiar with the situation” David Bernard passed on a “significant pay cut” offer, and decided to walk. Another former WFOR meteorologist, Jeff Berardelli, is said to have left for the same reasons.

No word on what’s next for David Bernard, and whether we would see him on TV in South Florida again. For now he’s staying in the area, his partner has connections to South Florida.

Jennifer Gray Lands at CNN Weather

Jennifer Gray Lands at CNN Weather

jennifer-gray-cnnWell, I was right when I predicted former WTVJ meteorologist Jennifer Gray is headed for a job in Atlanta.

CNN announced Gray has joined the news network’s weather team at their headquarters in Atlanta as a meteorologist. She’s dating Weather Channel meteorologist Chris Warren who is also based in Atlanta, hence her move.

From CNN press release:

Jennifer Gray has joined CNN as a meteorologist, it was announced today by Terence Burke, vice president of newsgathering for CNN/U.S.  Gray, who is a member of the National Weather Association and has earned the AMS Seal of Approval from the American Meteorology Society, will be based in Atlanta at the network’s global headquarters.

“Jennifer brings a versatile skill set as a meteorologist,” said Burke.  “She will be a great addition for CNN with her experience in production, multimedia and reporting in the field.”

Prior to joining CNN, Gray was the weekend morning show meteorologist and a feature reporter for WTVJ, the NBC affiliate in Miami, where she covered severe weather in the field and helped produce specials that focused on hurricane preparedness and safety.  She co-hosted and co-produced ‘Florida Insider Fishing Report’ for Sun Sports and ‘Beyond The Reef’ in conjunction with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, raising awareness of conservation issues facing the oceans and Florida’s fisheries.
