Some Predictions About Changes at WPLG

Some Predictions About Changes at WPLG

Ever since Post-Newsweek Emily Barr started rocking the boat at WPLG many inside and outside have wondered what else going to happen and how it would all end. My predictions about what could happen have sat as a draft post in my WordPress dashboard since then, and one of the things I thought would happen was that we would see Dave Boylan or news director Bill Pohovey leave before or after November sweeps. Well Boylan’s out already so I thought I might as well put the rest of it out there.

For one, I believe that if ratings at WPLG don’t improve longtime news director Bill Pohovey would be out too. I would take a guess and say that after November sweeps we might see an announcement that he’s leaving. Actually, now that Barr is installing a general manager I believe it’s even more plausible that Pohovey won’t last long, General Managers have the tendency to come in and clean house.

I also thought that we could see Peggy Phillip with a role in that new management structure. She is the Managing Editor at WPLG now, and was hired late last year as the morning executive producer. Several WPLGers gave me the same “no way” response when I told them about this but I believe the chance for Peggy Phillip to get another promotion at WPLG is high. Why? Well, she has a news director experience for one, having run WMC-TV in Memphis for 8 years and keeping it a dominant station in the ratings for most of that time. Before coming to WPLG Phillip was the news director at KSHB in Kansas, which had good ratings according to published reports. What’s more, Peggy Phillip once worked at WSVN, albeit in the early 1990s, I can’t recall what she did there but she undoubtedly learned some of that hustle WSVN is known for, and that other stations seem to want in their newsrooms, so she fits the ‘be more like 7’ idea and she’s got a bit of a reputation for being a tough, competitive bosslady.

And finally, we may see more on-air staffers leave. Like anchors getting shuffled or changed outright. Again, especially now that there is a new general manager coming in more changes are even more likely.

New WPLG Boss Set to Be Introduced to Staffers

New WPLG Boss Set to Be Introduced to Staffers

Writes one WPLG insider “…Barr is here and she wants to talk lol. We think she will introduce us to the new lieutenant she selected”

In case you didn’t know Emily Barr is Post-Newsweek’s boss, the lieutenant is the new WPLG GM and VP taking over for Dave Boylan who to some was sent into retirement because he allegedly protested too much about the changes Emily Barr was enacting at WPLG. Whoever it is, in all likelyhood he or she will share the same vision about WPLG as Barr.

A couple of WPLGers told me last month, there are more changes coming to WPLG, it’s not going to end with a new VP/GM.

Website Reveals Home Addresses of Local News Reporters

2

A website called DeadBeatLink has published the home address, phone numbers (some are redacted) and full dates of birth of local news reporters and anchors from Palm Beach County. So far the information posted seems to be on WPEC, Palm Beach Post, and Palm Beach Daily News staffers but the site’s owner says they will be “listing a new news organization every week”.

On a page titled “Why the Reporter List“, the site’s owner says journalists are targeted because they “ignore select political figures in Palm Beach and Broward County, turning their heads while their agencies run rampant with corruption” and because they “cover up things in their own industry; if a member of the media commits rape, they are dismissed quietly and it is ignored by the rest of the media, deemed not worthy of news”

If you have been a part of an unflattering story, look for the reporter here, knock at their door and tell them that you don’t appreciate it. Call them on the phone. Don’t worry – it’s a free country and just like they can come knock on your doors with cameras and lights, you can do the same.

The site’s owner(s) also released a video featuring the infamous Guy Fawkes face (though whether there’s any association with the group Anonymous is unknown) and a statement read in a digitally altered voice. The person says WPTV isn’t on the list for now because of investigative reporter Katie LaGrone who features government spending and consumer issues in her reports.

True, there needs to be a conversation on why local news is such utter bullshit, but revealing people’s home addresses (freely available on the internet by the way) isn’t the way to go about it. Safety issues aside, those in front of the camera aren’t even in charge of what stories get covered. Anchors certainly are in no position to decide, and even reporters for the most part are told where to go and what to do.

New Graphics for WFOR Soon

New Graphics for WFOR Soon

Soon WFOR will get a new paint job if you will. The CBS-owned station is set to receive a graphics make over as CBS is rolling out a new graphics package to all of its owned station. KYW and WCBS were some of the first CBS-owned stations to get the new look and WFOR will get it by the time November sweeps kick in.

The news geeks might notice that some elements in the graphics look similar to the graphics package NBC rolled out to its owned stations, known as Look F, and currently used by WTVJ.

Then on Friday WFOR morning meteorologist Lisette Gonzalez announced that she’s three months into her pregnancy, and on Monday revealed the baby’s gender (it’s a girl!). Anchor Natalia Zea is also expecting.
